i This invention relates to devices for attaching heels to shoes and will beexplained, for the purpose of illustration, by describlng an embodimentof the invention in a fastentener through a hole in the rear end of a last in a shoe and through the heel-seatportion x l3resnahan screw fastener, will simplifythef equipment necessary for the attachment ofof the shoe bottom into a heel, to secure the last, the shoe and the heel together so that various operations can be performed upon the heel or the shoe without waiting for, heel attaching adhesive to dry. In accordance with this method not'only'is the heel securely held in place againstthe heel seat-of the shoe during the drying of the adhesive wbut the shoe and last are clamped together "insuch a manner that the last distributes the clamping pressure over the entire heel-seat portion of the shoe. Thus, the latter is compressed between the heel and the last to conform the heel seat to the attaching face of the heel under pressure ther'ebyinsuring firm seating of the heel and the provision of a tight joint betweenthe shoe upper andthe rim around the attaching face of the heel. 7
An object of the present invention is to 7 provide an improved fastening device which,
while retaining all the advantages of the heels under usual shoefactory conditions by eliminating the necessity of'providing'fasferent heights.

In preparation for the use of the improved fastening device illustrated in the drawings, a last, a shoe and a heel are preliminarily clamped together by means fully illustrated and described in United States Letters Patout No. 1,664,657, granted April 3, 1928, upon my application. As shown in Fig. 2, the heel is firmly supported by a tread plate 10 and a vertically adjustable rear support 12, carried by a post 14 mounted on a table or bench.
\Vhile the last, shoe and heel are held preliminarily clamped as described, a drill is inserted through a hole passing through the rear end of the last and is guided by the hole in the last to drill a hole of predetermined depth through the heel seat of the shoe into the heel. After the heel has been prepared by drilling a hole, as above described, my im proved fastening device is inserted in the hole in the last. This device comprises an upper, or shank, part having a driver-engaging reduced head 22 (Figs. 1 and 7 and a central threaded stem 24 (Fig. 8) on its lower end. The stem 24is arranged to seat in a threaded hole 26 formed in the head 28 of a permanent heel fastening such as a threaded screw 30. If desired, a slot 32 (Fig. 5) may be formed in the head 28 of the screw so that the screw may be removed without undue difiiculty if it is necessary to remove the heel in repairing the shoe. The upper or shank part 20 and the screw are threaded together before insertion in the hole in the last, and the head 22 may be engaged by a power-driven, screw-inserting implement 34 constructed as described in the above identified Letters Patent No. 1,664,657. The parts are held in the relative positions shown in Fig. 1, until the screw 30 is driven home, with its head substantially flush with the upper surface of the sole of the shoe.
In order to clamp the last firmly to the permanent heel fastening 30, a last clamping nut 36 is threadedon the upper end of the shank part of the driving member 20 in such a manner that it may be turned into clamping engagement with the top of the last. Preferably, a leather or other compressible washer 38 is provided between the nut 36 and the last. As shown in Fig. 2, the nut 36 may be turned by a socket wrench including a manipulating handle 40 in which a wrench member 42 is mounted for turning movement.
- The wrench member 42 is formed at its lower end to engage the sides of the last clamping nut 36 and is provided with a cylindrical recess 44 to avoid the possibility of engaging the head 22 of the driving member 20.
I The wrench member is also formed with an upwardly projecting head 46 of substantially the same form as the head 22, adapted to be engaged by the implement 34 to operate the wrench to turn the last clamping member 36 firmly down against the top of the last. The last, the shoe and the heel having been firmly clamped together, as shown in Fig. 2, various finishing or other operations may be performed upon the shoe in any desired manner. The screw driving shank portion 20 of the fastening device is withdrawn, when desired, by turning it in the reverse direction whereupon the stem 24 and the member 20 separate from the recess 26 in the screw 30, leaving the screw 30 permanently securing the shoe and heel together.
Thereafter, the last may be removed from the shoe and the heel further secured by inside nailing in the usual way, if desired, or other operations may be performed upon the shoe in any preferred manner.
While one form of compound fastening has been particularly described, it should be understood that the scope of the invention is not limited to this specific form but that the invention may be embodied in various modified structures within the scope of the appended claims.
The improved method of making shoes which involves the use of the above-described fastening device is not claimed herein but is described and claimed in my application for United States Letters Patent Serial No.
666,880, filed December 14, 1922, matured into Patent No. 1,722,267, dated July 30, 1929,
of which the present application is a division.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A heel fastening device comprising, in combination, a shank adapted to extend through a last, a threaded portion at one end of the shank to engage a heel, a driver-engaging head at the opposite end of the shank, and a last-clamping nut threaded upon the shank. l
2. A two-part heel fastening comprising, in combination, a first part constructed and arranged to serve as a permanent heel fastening, and a separable part having a portion interengaging with and carrying said first part and another portion to engage a last and secure it to said first part.
3. A two-part heel fastening comprising, in combination, a first part constructed and arranged to serve as a permanent heel fastening, and a separable part having a portion interengaging with and carrying said first part and another portion including a shank to pass through-a hole in a last and a member to engage the top of the last.
4. A two-part heel fastening comprising, in combination, a first part constructedand arranged to serve as a permanent heel fastening, and a separable part having a portion and a last-engaging nut threaded on the shank. r V I In, testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
