This invention relates to new and useful improvements in packing glands.
An object of the invention comprehends the provision of a yieldable packing arranged :1 upon a plunger shaft or sand line to prevent leakage from the cylinder therebetween.
Another objectof the invention contemplates the arrangement of a well or compartment within the packing to facilitate ingress 1c of the contents of the cylinder to create hydraulic pressure thereagainst and tighten. the packing against the cylinder and plunger shaft.
An additional object of the invention embodies a clamping element for the packing. A further object of the invention consists of a seat for the packing.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim:

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corre sponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a coupling provided with a reduced exteriorly threaded sleeve portion 11 adapted for projection within the uppermost end of the uppermost of the sections and well tubing and to provide the means of connection between the tubing and the coulping. A beveled seat 12 is provided upon the inner side edge and communicates with the upper periphery of the coupling, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
A packing, such as indicated at 13, and preferably constructed of rubber, is of cylindrical form as evidenced from the illustration of same in Figure 2 of the drawings and from its particular application within a cylindrical coulping, and split, as at 14, lon- Serial No. 339,656.
gitudinally thereof from a central bore 15. The split portion 14 and central bore 15 provide the means of application of the packing about the polish rod, plunger rod, or sand line 16, from the side instead of from the ends. The upper portion of the packing 13 is in turn provided with an outwardly and upwardly flared beveled face 17 lying flush against and with the seat 12, as mentioned in the foregoing. An annular flange 18 carried upon the upper portion of the packing is shaped to overlie the adjacent periphery of the coupling 10.
A clamping member for the packing comprises companion sections 19 and 20 respectively of semi-circular formation and which are provided with spaced aligned ears22 in staggered relation adapted to accommodate a pivot pin 23 and a locking pin 24 upon diametrically opposite sides thereof. The inner side wall of the completed clamp formed by the companion semi-circular members 19 and 20 respectively are square threaded for engagement and adjustment upon the outer side wall of the housing.
A groove 25 of annular formation formed upon the inner side wall of the completed clamp is adapted to receive the adjacentportions of the flange 18 from the packing 13.
A flange 26 also of annular formation and inwardly projected from the upper periphery of he completed clamp is adapted to be extended over the upper side of the packing 13 above the flange 18 therefor to retain same against the adjacent periphery of the coupling 10. As a matter of convenience, each of the sections 19 and 20 may be provided with handles 27 to apply the clamp and to twist and rotate same aboutthe coupling 10 to insure frictional engagement between the flange 26 therefor and the flange 18 of the packing 13.
The packing 13 has spaced annular chamhere 28 and 29 respectively having communication through the body of the packing through ports 30.
A metallic washer, generally designated, as at A, is composed of'companion sections and seated adjacent the periphery thereof upon a shoulder portion .31 defined between the points of intersection between the coupling 10 and sleeve 11 therefor. Bolts or other fastenings, such as indicated at 32, passed through the sections of the washer A, provide the means of clamping the washer about the polish rod or sand line 16 and to provide in entirety a seat for the lowermost portion of the packing, as shown in Figure l of my drawings.
Each of the sections forming the washer A are provided with channels 33 having com munication with pockets 3%- immediately adjacent ports 35 in communication with the annular channel or chamber 29. The present invention is applied within couplings and upon sand lines or polish rods when swabbing an oil well.
By reason of the fact that the packing and washer are of split and separable formation, the same may be applied to the sand line or polish rod from the side instead of the ends whereby a great saving of labor in the unloosening of the sand line or connection of the polish rod with the derrick arm is made.
In use, the swab will carry and raise a mixture of oil and water upon its ascending stroke and fill the chambers 28 and 29 of the packing. Such pressure will cause the packing to compress itself about the polish rod or sand line to render the connection therebetween leak proof whereas the upper side wall of the chamber 28 will be forced in an upward direction to insure frictional engagement by hydraulic pressure against the inwardly projecting flange portion 26 of the completed coupling, whereby the mixture will flow through the lead lines below the coupling in the well tubing. When a swab comes up on the polish rod or sand line and strikes the washer A, the same in conjunction with the packing 18 will be moved and shoved upwardly and out of the coupling 10.
The constituency of the packing 13 is such that the flange 18 will under such pressure compress and release itself from the flange 26 of the clamp whereas the washer A will pass upwardly through the bore of the coupling 10 free of contacting engagement with the flange 26 inasmuch as the latter does not project inwardly far enough toward the bore of the coupling to restrict passage of same therethrough. The washer and packing may then be readily removed, after the manner of the coupling and same may be used repeatedly.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A packing gland comprising a coupling including an attaching sleeve upon one end having a polish rod passed centrally therethrough, a washer of separable formation clamped about the polish rod within the coupling, a packing of yieldable formation in cluding a central bore to accommodate that portion of the polish rod above the washer, said packing being split longitudinally thereof from the central bore outwardly to one side to facilitate accommodation of the polish rod within the central bore of the packing from the side, the packing being further provided with spaced annular chambers wholly within the body thereof and in communication with each other and the inner side wall of the coupling, the washer having passageways in the bottom thereof in communication with the bore of the sleeve and chainbers to facilitate admission of fluids therein under pressure and to compress the adjacent portions of the packing about the polish rod, a clamping member carried by and adjustably mounted upon the coupling, and a flange aortion inwardly projecting from the outermost end of the clamping member beyond the adjacent periphery of the coupling frictionally engaging the packing to retain same seated against the upper side of the washer.
