PATENT PEI.
THOMAS J. BEEBE AND LOUISAM. BEEBE, or PLANO, rumors.
IMPROVEMENT IN MUSIC-LEAF TURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,525, dated August 1, 1876 application filed June 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS J BEEBE and LOUISA M. BEEBE, of Plano, in the county of Kendall and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Turning Music; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of afront elevation of our music-leaf turner. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation'of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
This invention has relation to means for holding sheet-music, and allowing the player to turn the sheets one at a time without interfering with the performance; it consists of a horizontally sliding rack plate constructed with several tiers of teeth on its front side, adapted to actuate the leaf-turning arms, in combination with ratchet-teeth on the back of said plate, and with a spring-lever for moving the plate when it is desired to turn a leaf, as will be understood from the accompanying drawings, and the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a standard rising from a shelf, B, and G O designate fingers for holding the bound or unbound music while playing. At the upper end of the standard A is secured, in a horizontal position, a plate, D, formed with a grooved slide, which receives a T-shaped tongue, fixed to a longitudinally-movable plate, E. This plate E is constructed with a series of rows, 1) b, of teeth, arranged as shown, and which are adapted to engage respectively with teeth which are formed on the pivoted ends of arms or leaf-turners F. These pivoted ends of the leaf-turners are arranged one on top of the other in planes, corresponding to the planes of the toothed rows 1) I). The outer or free ends of the leaf-turners F have spring-clips e secured to them, which gripe the lean es of music and cause them to be turned when the arms swing from right to left. When the turners are respectivel y moved around they are stopped in proper position by an upright rod, f. G designates a lever, which has its fulcrum at g, and which is constructed with a finger,'p, on its upper end, which operates as a pawl on ratchet-teeth r, to give movement to the sliding plate E. The back strokes of the upper end of the lever G are effected by means of a spring, S, and the forward strokes, which move the sliding plate E, are effected by means of one or more cords, which may be operated by the hand of the performer or by his foot. When it is desired to turn back the leaf-turners F F, the spring-lever 'l is employed to throw the fingers 1) out of gear with the ratchet 1".
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
.1. The slide E, constructed with teeth I) I) and ratchet-teeth 1", arranged as described, in combination with the guide D, the vibrating leaf-turners F, and the lever Gr, substantially as described.
2. The lever G, actuated as described, and provided with a finger, p, and a spring-lever, T, in combination with toothed slide E, and vibrating arms or leaf-turners F, substan tially as described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
