Description

SASH LOCK Filed April 24. 1930 1' n venior i A tinmey Patented May 12, 1931 SAMUEL GOLDMAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK SASH Application filed April 24,
This invention pertains to new and useful improvements in builders hardware, and more particularly it pertains to a sash look.
It is an object of the present invention to a provide a novel sash lock which may be ad: justed to position to prevent movement of either sash of a double sash window.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of novel means whereby the sash holding member may be securely locked in sash holding position.
Other features of the invention relate to certain novel and improved construction, arrangement and combination of parts herelnafter described and particularl pointed out in the claims, theadvantages of which will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention in its preferred form and the following detailed description of the construction therein shown.
In the drawings,
Figure 1, is a detail perspective view showing a sash lock constructed in accordance with the present invention and its manner of attachment and use,
Figure 2, is a detail rear view thereof, and
Figure 3, is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Referring specifically to the drawings, A designates the upper sash, B the lower sash and C designates the window frame in which the sashes A and B are mounted for sliding movement.
A sash lock constructed in accordance with the present invention, includes a base 5 suitably secured as at 6, preferably to the top rail of the bottom sash B.
Pivotally mounted upon the base 5, there is a sash engaging fastening element 7 having a sash engaging foot 8 which latter is of suitable friction material, preferably rubber. Extending rearwardly from the member 9 in which the sash engaging foot 8 is mounted, there are two side members 10, and the rear ends of these side members are adapted for positioning between lugs or ears 13 stand ing up from the base 5. The lugs or ears LocK 1930. Serial No. 446,937.
13, and the side walls 10 are perforated for the reception of a pintle pin or the like 14, which forms the means by which the fastening element 7 is pivotally mounted upon the base 5.
The side walls 10 are relatively wider in termediate of their ends, and these relatively wide portions are notched as at 15. Bridging the fastening element 7, and adapted to be received in said notches 15 there is a cross arm 16. The cross arm 16 is provided with an opening 17 for the reception of a threaded bolt 18 pivotally mounted as at 19 on the base 5. A nut 20 is employed for engagement with the cross arm 16 to secure the same in the notches 15. To prevent pivotal movement in one direction of the screw threaded member 18, a pawl or the like 25 may be mounted upon the pintle pin 14 with its nose 26 in engagement-with said screw threaded member 18.
To secure the sashes A and B against movement, the fastening element 7 is moved with its sash engaging foot into engagement with the upper sash as illustrated in Figure 3. The cross arm is now positioned in the notches 15 with the screw threaded member 18 in the opening 17 thereof. If now the nut 20 be moved into engagement with the cross arm 16, the cross arm will be maintained in the notches 15, and the fastening element 7 will be prevented by the nut 20 from moving about the pintle pin 14. If new the pawl 25 be moved to position in which its nose 26 engages the threaded member 18, it will also be noted that the member 18 will be prevented from moving about its pivotal point 19.
The device is shown in its window sash locking position, and it will be obvious with D the parts in the position shown, movement of either sash is prevented.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters-Patent, is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a window sash engaging fastening element pivotally carried thereby, a threaded member carried by the base, a crossarm for engagement with the fastening element, and means carried by the thread ed member for maintaining engagement of the cross arm with the fastening element.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a window sash engaging fastening element pivotally carried thereby, a threaded member carried by the base, a cross arm for engagement with the fastening element, and means carried by the threaded member for maintaining engagement of i the cross arm with the fastening element, and a pawl for engagement with said threaded member.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a base, a window sash engaging fastening element pivotally carried thereby, a threaded member pivotally mounted on the base, a cross arm for engagement with the fastening element, means carried by the threaded member for maintaining engagement of the cross arm with the fastening element, and a pivoted pawl carried by the base and adapted to prevent movement of the threaded member upon its pivotal point. 4. A device of the character described,
comprising a base, flanges projecting therefrom, a sash engaging fastening element pivoted in said flanges, notched flanges projecting from said fastening element, a cross 30 arm adapted for reception in said notches to preventpivotal movement of the fastening element when the cross arm is prevented from moving, and means for preventing movement of the cross arm.
35 5. A device of the character described,
comprising a base, flanges projecting therefrom, a sash engaging fastening element pivoted in said flanges, notched flanges projecting from said fastening element, a cross arm 49 adapted for reception in said notches to prevent pivotal movement of the fastening ele ment when the cross arm is prevented from moving, and means for preventing movement of the cross arm, said last mentioned means 45 comprising a threaded member carried by the base, and including a nut for engagement with the cross arm.
6. A device of the character described, comprising a base, flanges projecting there- 50 from, a sash engaging fastening element pivoted in said flanges, notched flanges projecting from said fastening element, means for engagen'lcnt with the notches thereof to prevent pivotal movement of the fastening element when the cross arm is prevented. from moving, and means for preventing movement of the cross arm, said last mentioned means comprising a threaded member pivotally mounted upon the base and projecting through an opening in the cross arm, and a. nut carried by the threaded member and adapted for movement into engagement with said cross arm.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
SAMUEL GOLDMAN.
