This invention relates to electrical condensers and more particularly to small rolled condensers and to a new and improved method of manufacture thereof.
The invention provides means for enclosing a rolled condenser in a suitable container and for making electrical contact with the armatures of the condenser by terminal members extending through said container. A sealing or filling material is employed for preventing atmospheric conditions from affecting the capacity of the condenser and for securing a more compact and unitary assembly.
The container itself comprises a base member having side walls aiiixed thereto, certain of which are perforated to permit the passage of terminal members. A metallic cover is adapted to be readily secured to said side walls for permanently closing the container after the various parts have been positioned. Terminal members of novel construction are employed which are clamped between the end of the condenser and a side wall of the container. Insulating and spacing members properly locate the various parts.
The invention also consists in certain new and original features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may be better understood by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which partly in sec- Serial No. 247,491.
In the following description and in the claims parts will be identifiedy by specific names for convenience, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to siml ilar parts as the art will permit. y
Referring to the drawings more in detail, a condenser is shown as comprising a rolled paper condenser section PS which may be formed in the usual manner by rolling alternate strips of conducting foil and insulating material. Section PS is provided with tabs T connecting with the armatures of opposite potentials and forming means for contacting with the terminal members 5.
Section PS is enclosed in a container having a bottom member 1C and side walls 1. A pair of openings 1A are provided at one end of said container through which terminal members 5 may extend. A plurality of slots 1B are formed in the side walls 1 to engage cooperating lugs 2A carried by cover member 2 which is adapted to be passed over the upper edge of side members 1 and when in position to be permanently secured by said slots 1B and lugs 2A. Lugs 2A are tapered upwardly and inwardly from said cover to permit the same to resiliently pass over side members l and to automatically lock in slots 1B to preventl subsequent removal of said cover.
Mounting plate 10 having extensions 10A and 10B which are provided with holes 10C and 10D respectively to facilitate mounting upon an adjacent surface, is secured to said container as by means of solder 9 engaging the contacting portions thereof. Mounting plate 10 serves as a support for the container assembly and provides a convenient means for mechanically mounting the same.
Tabs T are secured to terminal members 5, which are bent in the form of a U around a positioning piece 6 formed preferabl of waxed cardboard. Bent portions 5A o terminal members 5 may be conveniently held in slots 6A in said positioning piece. One side of the U shaped portion of the terminal members is bent at right angles and passed through bakelite shield 4 which serves as a sup ortin and positioning member by means of)whic they are held in the desired relationship to pable of formin the condenser stack PS and to openings 1A in the container.
Stack PS may be sitioned in the container by means of a ottom insert 8 which may be formed of waxed cardboard'and a plurality of shims 7 formed of a similar material inserted between the end of the stack and side wall 1. Terminal members 5, insulating shield 4 and positioning piece 6 are clamped between the other end of stack PS and wall 1. The .entire container is then 'filled with Wax W which serves to firmly hold the condenser in place and forms a seal against the entrance of moisture. Cover 2 may be sna ped upon container Walls 1 and held secure y thereto in the manner above mentioned to form the completed assembly. Various testing operations may be carried out, however, before the final positioning of the cover member.
A condenser constructed in' accordance with the present invention is cheap and compact. The roll is securely held in position by the shims and by the wax, the latter serving a dual function of support and protector. The terminal structure `is cheap but is caa strong assembly which can be used wit out danger of mechanical damage. The container itself is easily assembled and provides a mechanical support for the entire condenser.
The above described condenser is articularly adapted tol be used as a by-pass 1n radio circuits where a condenser of comparatively large capacity is required and where onl a small amount of space is available there or. The invention, however, is not limited to this application since the structure may be applied to various other ty of condensers which are well known in t e art. s While certain novel features of the invention have been shown and described and are pointed out in the annexed claims, it will be understood that various omissions, substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the art with- ;nit departing from the spirit of the invenion.
What is lclaimed is: 1, A container for an electrostatic condenser comprising base and side walls, a mounting plate having tabs extending at opposite sides of said container, means for securing said container to said mounting late, a cover cooperating with said side wa and means for automatically locking said cover in position,

3. In combination with an electrical condenser, a container therefor, a pair of terminal members extending through said container and contacting with opposite armatures of said condenser, a positioning piece for saifd terminal members, means for securing said members to said positionin piece, an insulating member secured to sai terminal and means for clamping said insulating member within said container.
4. In combination with an electrical condenser, a casing therefor,terminal members extending through one side of said casing and means for securing said terminal members to said condensercomprisin a positioning piece and an insulating mem er and means for clamping said terminal member, positionin piece and insulating member between sai condenser and said container.
