POCKET IMPLEMENT Filed May 17, 1927 l/ 021 jfLZAi/z Patented May 12,1931
OTTO ALTECN'BACH, 013 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA rocxnr IMPLEMENT Application filed. May 17, 1927. Serial No. 192,029.-
This invention relates to tools or implements such as folding pocket knives.
In my prior application, Serial No. 186,703, filed April 26, 1927, and entitled Pocket 6 or folding knife I describe a folding knife in which the spring of the knife projects beyond the bolster thereof at one end, and is fashioned into atool capable of use as a screw-driver, a wedge, a wrench, or a glass 10 breaker. It is one of the objects of my invention to improve in'general the device 7 shown in that application.
It is another object ofmy invention to make it possible to cover the exposed end of the blade spring so as to prevent injury to the pockets by the tools formed at the ends of the spring.
My invention possesses many other advantages, and has other objects which may be 2 made more easily apparent from a consideration of several embodimentsof my invention. For this purpose I have shown a few forms in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. I shall now proceed to describe these forms in detail, which illustrate the general principles of my invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the of a knife illustrating another form of my invention; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side view of a knife illustrating still another form of my invention.
scope of my invention is best defined by the g p In the form illustrated show a folding knife blade 11 pivoted at 12, the. pivot extending through the handle member 13. The spring. 14 for holding the blade 11 eitherin closed or open position in the Well-known manner, extends at the left beyond the handles of the knife. It is formed into a tool, as for example by the aid of the notches and grooves such as 15. This extremity is in general circular. i
In order to cover this tool end when not. inuse and so as to makeit convenient for carrying-it in the pocket, I provide a folding cover. In the form of'Figs. .1 to 4, this folding cover consists of a series of nested U-shaped sections 16, 17 18, 19 and 20. The largest section 16 is shown as fastened as by rivets 21 to the spring 14;, and handles 13 are cut away as shown in- Fig. 3 to provide a space for these sections when in telescoped position. The smaller telescoping sections, one of which is shown in greater detail in Fig. 4, are each pivotally movable attheir inner ends on a pin 22, and are each provided withse'ctor-shaped sides. They can all nest inside of the stationary section 16, and are in that position while the tool is in use. However, whenthe knife is to be carried in the pocket,'the cover sections are in the position shown in Figs-1 and 3. The smallest section 20 carries a snap 23 which projects into a corresponding notch 24 in the upper portion of the spring 14. In order to ensure that the sections will take the circular form illustrated, and form a continuous. guard or cover, they are provided with overlapping edges 25, 26. These edges extend atsubstantially right angles or radially, to the arcuate portion 27 (Fig.4) of the sections, and adj acent their ends. The edge 25 extends outin Figs. 1 to 4,. I
PATENT OFFICE wardly and is arranged to contact with the inwardly projecting edge such as 26 of the adjacent, larger section. Due to the provision of these overlapping edges, it is assured that as the smallest section 20 is extended out of the stationary section 16, all the other I movable sections must follow and form the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2. I
In order to ensure retention of the movable sections in the section 16, the sides thereof contact frictionally with each other. Thus the nested cover sections are held out of the way while the tool is in use.
The covers can take other forms beside that shown. Thus in'Fig. 5, I show the tool end 28 of a knife spring 29, that is arranged to be covered by a pai-r of half Shells; 30 and These can snap together at their meeting edges, as shown at 32. They are hinged at their back edges to theknife bolsters 33,, as
indicated at 34.
In Fig. 6 I illustrate still another form of guard or cover, for the projecting tool end of the knife 36. In thisform, I-show a shell-like, semicircular guard 37 made from thin sheet-metal. It is hinged at38" to the upper edge of the knife bolster 39; At its otheredge, the guard carries a spring snap 40 Wh10h' can engage into an appropriate notch in the lower portion of spring 41.-
I claim:
1. A pocket knife, having a tool at one end,
and a guard for the tool comprising a plurality-of pivoted sections forming a continuous cover.
2; A pocket knife, having a tool at one end,
and a-cover member for covering'the tool when not in. use, comprising a series of sectorsha -ied-scctions pivoted on a common axis.
3. A pocketknife, having a tool at one end, and a cover member for covering the tool when not-in use, comprising a series of sector shaped-sections pivoted on. a common axis,- said sections'when open, nesting together.
4. A pocket knife, having a tool at one end, and a cover member for covering the tool when not in use, comprising a series of sectorslrap'edsections pivoted on a common axis, at,
least some of said sect ion'shaving edges which contact with edges on adjacent sect-ions, for ensuring that; they will; form acontinuous guard.
5; A- pocket implement having a tool at one end and a cover for the-tool, comprising a stationary -U-sliaped section havingsectors-haped sides, and a. series of progressively smaller-sections shaped similarly tothe' said stationary section, but pivotally movable about a common'axis, and capable of-all nestmg in said-stationary sectlon, said-section at one edge having an inward projection, the next smaller sect on having an outward projection arrangedto contact with said inwlard' projection to ensure a slight overlapping of these sections when fully extended, the succeeding sections at their overlapping edges being likewise provided withcooperating projections.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
OTTO ALTENBi GI-I.
