Description

May l2, 1931. D R, YARNALL 1,805,064
STEAM TRAP Filed Aug. 6l 1925 ZM i E provide for lifting of Patented May 12, 1931 NM'JL-W'ARING COMPANY, 0F PHILADELPHIA,-PENNSYLVANIA A CORPORATION QF DAVD PENNSYLVANIA v STEAM-TRAB i d application mea August c, ieee. serilu No. rar-,sea My invention relates to steam traps and particularly to methods of operating the valves of such a trap.
The main purpose of my invention is to ball rvalves from their seats by the hammer as distinguished from wedging the balls from their seats in previous yforms.
A further purpose is to provide for displacement of ball valves upon their seats by the operating` rod of a hammer blow bucket type steam trap and to operate the valves by levers between the operating rods and the valves.
A further purpose is to lift the balls of a ball valve bucket type steam trap by lifting wedges balanced with respect to the valves.
A further purpose is to increase the capacity of the float bucket without .increasing its height nor its overflow diameter.
Further purposes will appear in the specilication and in the claims.
I prefer to illustrate my invention lby but one form, selecting a form which is simple,
practical andhighly desirable and which at the same time well illustrates the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a central'vertical section of a structure embodying` my invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary ysection taken 1 and looking in upon line Q-Zof Figure the direction of the arrows.
My invention is intended to bean improvement upon a. type of valves at present in use and which is shown in Charles H. rlhompson application for patent Serial No. 711,344,
filed May v6, 1921i, and particularly to avoid the downward component of the wedge pressure present in the valve operation of this rlhompson form of intermittent ldischarge trap. l
The main or lower compartment 6,l having inlet 7 and clean-out plug 8 contains within it the operating bucket 9 which is enlarged in diameter at its lower end to give additional Rotation without enlarging its overiow diameter. `VThe lcompartment is closed .at the top by aflange memberll boltedfast to the upper 'flange-12 of the lower compartment.

and has its lower end 14 serrated to avoidpo'sl sible closure against the bottom ofv the bucket. f
The upper surface of the flangemember 10 is used to'y forma valve plate lwhich lis Ybored at 16 in registration with the upper and open end of the tube'13.y The'valve seats c 17 are set at some distance and are equally spaced from it. ,Each 'valve from this bore 16y seat lies within the rim 18 of a threaded bush 19.v Y, .A y p ",.The ,lever 26 pivotedv at 27 in a' post 28 threaded into the valve plate and forsafety The inner endV of the the form of locknuts 31 upon a thread-32.`
engagement with the rod and 'allows the rod to deliver a hammer blow to the lever andV hencethrough the wedge tothe ball valves, lifting and at the same time spreading these valves.
the lock nutsl or other v This engagement between side ofthe lower lock" nut transmitting the' :blow simultaneously and lequally to all of ythe balls. i
The bucket' is protected from direct lateral flow of the stream vfrom the inlet 7 by al suitable balie33 forming the inside wall of a downwardly directed inlet passage 34.
lVith this arrangement, when the bucket''f starts to lill and sink'there' is no immediate Y The operation is improved by providing a vent 36 throughV the baffle 33 from the top of the inlet passage i i andan outlet vent 37 from the main compart: ment preferably into the tube 13 above the bucket and below' the cover 10.
yThe screw stem.38 isprovided lwithlhand upper end of the rod 30 Ato-open the valves and to hold them open as long .asdesiredy I jl into theV main compartment wheel 39 Aand packing gglandeo. rWhen -screwed down it' engages and Vdepr'ess'es the s In operation drainage from the' steam lines enters the trap at the inlet pipev 7 rising until it overflows into the floating bucket 9. The! bucket begins to sink as it fills and as it does so fills with a rush causing it to sink with a rush. As the bucket starts to sink the rod 30 moves downwardly slowly with it, followed 5 b a very rapid movement causing a hammer blbw by the lock nuts upon t-his rod. This blowacts equally upon each of the balls, and rolls the balls laterally from their seats openinthe trap to discharge.
team pressure within the trap now forces..
rapid discharge into and through the open notched end 14 of the central ypipe 18 into the top shell and out through the uncovered ports 17 into the discharge passage 19 and thence through pipe 21 to waste, emptying the bucket.
As the bucket empties it rises, floating upwardly lifting the rod and releasing the end of the lever 26 surrounding the rod. The
20 vouter end of the lever being heavier than the inner end, the lever tilts in a counter-clockwise position permitting the ball valves to roll back to their positions over the valve openings. This is assisted by the weight of the balls which tend to depress the outer end of the lever. When the ball valvesV close the openings they stop the discharge completing the cycle.` *Y The vent 36 automatically prevents locking of air or other vapor in the inlet passage 34 and the vent 37 automatically relieves air or vapor locked in the upper part vof the lower compartment resulting in much better and smoother operation.
My construction retains the advantagesy of Y wedge action present in the structure of the Thompson application above referred to while avoiding the downward pressure upon the balls present in that construction and 40 combining wedge and lifting actions to great advantage.l Y
In View of my invention and disclosure, f variations and modiiications to meet individual need or particular whim will doubtless become evident to others skilled in the art, I of course intend to claim herein all such in so far as they fall within the reasonable spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention', what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is z- Y y In a steam trap for intermittent discharge,
a trap bucket, a compartment therefor, a pluu rality of spaced independent Vdischarge valves each comprising a seat and a ball adapted to roll over andaway fromthe valve opening, a projection movable withthe trap bucket, ,a lever having one end adapted to engage all ,of the balls to roll themfrom their seats,
f heavier at the end which engages the balls so as normally to eXert no pressure upon them, and atits opposite end coming within the path of movement of the projection and a pivotA for the lever between its ends.
