Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,050, dated August 25, 1857.

The object of my invention is in a simple and economical manner, to transform a common washing tub into an effective washing machine, the nature of which consists in making the rubber shaft pass through a tubular guide piece held by braces so connected with the side of the tub as to be capable of a double movement about said attachment, the details of construction and operation being as follows:
In the drawing T is the tub, the bottom of which is covered with a corrugated plate. In.practice the plate may be of Zinc, corrugated in one direction only and cut to t the bottom. Any character of rib may however be used.
It is the rubber consist-ing of a wooden disk having any desired character of rib Freni its upper surface arises a shaft s, across the head of which runs a lever L by which the machine is operated.
The shaft s passes through the tubular guide piece P, and will be made to fit snugly therein, so that it may turn easily and also move longitudinally when required. This tube P is rigidly attached to two braces b b, which unite at a, and are hinged to the swivel pin d. This pin fits in a socket e, and thereby enables the braces b b to have two movements, one vertical and the other horizontal. This enables the disk rubber to assume the position shown in` Fig. 3.
The socket, swivel pin, and braces wlll in practice be -metallic castings, so constructed that the simple attachment of the socket to the side of a common tub by screws or otherwise will be the sole connection of the operating mechanism with the body of the machine.
B B are braces, hinged to plates screwed to the side of the tub, and designed to hold the tube P irm during the washing operation.
The operation of the machine is as follows z-The rubber having the position of Fig. 3, the clothing is placed in the tub with the necessary supply of water and soap. The rubber is then placed upon the clothing by a combined vertical and horizontal movement, effected by reason of the connection of braces b I) with the tub. The braces B B are then allowed to press against the tube P as shown in Fig. l, which position they will maintain by reason of their weight. The tube P is then firmly sustained, and the washing operation is performed by the alternate partial rotation of the disk by power applied to lever L. Whenever during the operation it is necessary toadjust the contents of the tub, the rubber is readily removed to the position shown in Fig. 3, without the application of power to any other portion of the apparatus than the lever L. For this adjustment the braces B B are first thrown back. Should it be deemed sufficient, but one of these braces may be employed.
This machine combines facility of operation, with simplicity and economy of construction.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The tubular guide piece P, forked brace b ZJ, joint a, swivel pin cl, and socket e, in combination with braces B B and the rubber shaft s, constructed, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes specified.
