IMPROVEMENT IN CIRCUIT CLOSERS 0R OPENERS FOR BURGLARALARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,497, dated August 1, 1876; application filed January 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. PHILIPS, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Circuit Closers or Openers for Burglar- Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap and simple circuit-controller, capable of being used without any change of structure either upon an open'or closed circuit; and to this end it consists in those features more particularly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure] is a perspective "iew, Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 is a side view, of my invention.

A is a metallic base of any suitable form. Secured upon it by screws d dis a stiff spring, 0. Between the spring and base is interposed the block D, of non-conducting material. At its upper end the spring is formed into a jaw or stirrup, or else a jaw or stirrup is attached thereto, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. In the sides of this jaw is journaled a roller, F, pro jecting through an aperture in the base, as shown in Fig. 3. Wire 1 leads to a bindingscrew attached to the base, and wire 2 leads to a screw, 6, on the piece E, which may be the end of or a separate piece attached to the spring 0, the circuit of 1 and 2 being completed or interrupted, as the case may be, at a c.

In Fig. 2 is shown the device applied to the side of the window-casing. If it be desired to use the device in a circuit normally closed, a groove is cut in the window-sash at the point where it is desired that the sash shall normally stand. Then, if the sash is moved from such position, the sides thereof, impinging against the roller F, force it in, carrying c away from a, breaking the circuit. If the device is to be used in a normally-open circuit, the sash is left uncut at those points where no alarm is desired, and is grooved where an alarm is desired. Whenever, then, the sash be raised so that a grooved place is opposite, the roller springs into it, allowing a and c to contact and close circuit.

It is evident that the base A may, if desired, be made of insulating material, and the contact-point a made as part of binding-screw b, in which case the insulating-block D could be dispensed with.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a suitable base, having contact-point a, of a spring located thereon, and provided with contact-point c and roller F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
