It is an object of this invention to provide a collapsible globe whichis'f simple and ruggod in construction, light in weight, and in which the number of operations necessary for assembling are reduced to a minimum.
It is a further-object of this invention to provide a practical collapsible globe which may be manufactured and sold at a relatively lowcost. Still further objects and advantages of my invention willbe apparent from the'specification. I I

In accordance with my invention, I provide a fabric envelope which is preferably '35 globe according tomy invention, showing the formed of a series of petal-like sections which are sewn or otherwise secured together in the form of a substantially spherical-envelope. The petal-likesections are so formed as to leave an opening inthe completed spherical envelope of suficient size to permit the insertion of a bladder into the envelope. Ad jacent the opening, I prefer to provide on each of the petal-like sections a small tab which may be folded over and sewed or rivetted to form a loop adjacent'the opening of the envelope. To provide an anchoring member by means of which the globe may be secured to a base, I provide aring within the loops already described, the said ring being thereby positioned atthe opening in the envelope, and for convenience ofmanufacture, the ring is. preferably splitso that it may be readily inserted intothe loops, although under certain conditions, the ring may besolid and may be secured in position by folding the tabs over it and then fastening the ends of the tabs. For the purpose of carrying and supporting the inflatable globe, I provide a base plate preferably in the general form and contour to fit the bottom of the globe. This plate is also provided with a central opening through which the bladder may be insertedor withdrawn, and is preferably provided adjacent the central opening with an annular trough to receive "the an? choring ring. For the purpose of securing the anchoring ring in positionon the base plate, I providev means carried by the base plate which may beqin the form of flexible fingers, which'may be bent over the ring to secure it inposition and I also provide means on the base plate adapted to receive or co operate with any desired form ofstand or shaft.
Referring now more particularly to Figure 1, 1 designates generally a flexiblefabric envelope which may be provided with suitable-markings such for example asamap of the world in anydesired representation. The fabric envelope 1 is maintained in spherical shapebymeans of a suitable inflatable bladder 2 positioned therein. The -bladder2 may conveniently' be one of the type used in basket- H balls for example, and has a stem 2a through W) which it may be inflated. The envelope 1 is preferably formed by sewing together a pluralityof petal-like sections of fabric a, provided with a selvage edge 5, to allow for a seam, and also carrying at one end a tab 6 for the purpose of securing the flexible envelope to the anchoring ring 8. I
It will be noted that the distance from the equator to the base of the tab 6 is less than that from the equator to the opposite end of the section 4, whereby when the sections 4 are sewed together, a polar opening will be left in the envelope 1.
In assembling the envelope, the sections 4 will be sewed together with the seam on the outside, and the tab 6 will be preferably turned over and sewed with. the seam on the same; side, either before or after the sections are sewed together.
The split ring 8 may then be inserted in the loops 7, after which the. envelope may be turned inside out through the: opening where the ring 8 is positioned, and all seams will then lie on the interior. 7
As an alternative to the use of a split ring, a solid ring may be used, afterwhich the tabs may be turned over to form the loop 7, and then sewed or rivetted in position.
7 For the purpose of mounting the globe, I provide a base plate 9 having a central opening 10: and an annular trough 11. The base plate 9iwill be preferably of a shape and size to fitand' support the bottom of the en.-
velope 1, and the trough 11 is provided to receive the anchoring ring 8. The use of such a trough permits a better fit between the base plate and the bottom of the globe, and although I prefer toutilize it, it will be understood that under certain conditions, it may be omitted.
In order to anchor the ring 8 in position on: the base plate, I provide means carried by thebase plate and embodying preferably flexible. fingers, which lie within the ring 8 i and may bebent outwardly over the ring to hold: it in position. In'the preferred form of my'invention, there are provided a plurality of'flexible fingers 14 carried upon a sleeve 12 provided with a boss 13,0f the proper size to fit snuglyw-ithin the opening 10 in the base plate 9.
After the ring 8 has been positioned withinthetrough 11, the sleeve 12 may be inserted in the opening 10 until the boss 13 engages the inner edge of the base plate, after which the fingers 14' will project upwardly over the ring 8. These fingers are then bent outward 1y over the ring 8 in theman'ner shown in Figure 1, and presseddownwardly preferably until they lie fiush with the projected inner spherical surface of the base plate 9, thereby minimizing the possibility of the bladder being; punctured. The downwardly depending sleeve 12 may, be arranged to, fit upon any suitable stand by means of a socket joint, bayonet joint or the like, and as the manner of making such connection forms'no part of this invention, it is not described in detail.
lVhile I have described one form of myinvention, which is preferable under certain conditions, nevertheless modifications may be made: for instance, the globe 1 may be made of eight sections, each section being substantially in the form of a spherical triangle, the anglesat the apexes of which are all approximately 90: also, while I have shown the fingers 14 mounted upon a separate sleeve 12, the base plate 9 and sleeve 12 may be formed integral by suitably drawing the baseplate, and the fingers. 14may be, punched out from the base plate in any suitable manner, as shown in Figure 6.
It will be noted that an advantage of the construction described is that while the. construction is simple and inexpensive, nevertheless the complete globe presents a finished appearance, because all joints are concealed.
WVhile I have shown and described certain preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be restrictedtothe precise'form shown and described, but that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, aswill be understood by those skilled in the art.

base plate arranged to receive said rin and extending outwardly from the ring-receiving portion to form a support for the lower portion of said envelope, and means carried by said base plate for securing said ring and said base; plate in position, saidv means comprising a gripping member extending over said ring ata plurality of points.

4. In a collapsible globe, in combination,
a collapsible envelope having an opening therein, a ring insertable in said envelope at said opening, a base plate having a central opening, and an annular depression surrounding said opening and arranged to receive said ring and having an envelope supporting portion surrounding said depression, and means associated With said base plate for maintaining said rin in said depression.
5. In a collapsible glo e, in combination, a collapsible envelope having an opening therein, a ring insertable in said envelope at said opening, a base plate having a central opening and an annular depression surrounding said opening and arranged to receive said ring and an envelope supporting portion surrounding said depression; and a sleeve engageable with the opening in said base plate and having a plurality of inwardly projecting fingers bendable outwardly over said ring to maintain said ring in position on said base plate.
6. In a collapsible globe, in combination,
a collapsible envelope formed of sections of fabric secured together and having a polar opening; and having loops formed in said fabric at said opening; a split ring insertable in said loops; a base plate having a central opening, and an annular ring-receiving trough surrounding said opening; and a collar insertable in said opening in said base plate, said collar being provided With a plurality of spaced upwardly extending fingers bendable over said ring to secure said ring in position in said annular trough.
