Description

UNITED PATENT OEErc.
FRIEDRICH HELLING, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FURNITURE'CASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.`l0,477, dated August 1, 1876; application filed April 27,186.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH HELLING, of the city of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented a new and useful Elastic Furniture-Caster, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of an elastic caster, whereby the desired spring can be obtained in chairs or other description of furniture without the use of stuffed seats. A
My invention consists in arranging around the rod to which the roller or knob is attached either a number of india-rubber rings or other suitable springs, between the socket (in which the rod is guided, and which is attached to the bottom of the leg of the piece of furniture) and the roller or knob, as hereinafter more fully described and definitely claimed.
In the accoinpan yin g drawing, Figure I represents a section ot' a knob-caster with my iinprovenient. Fig. II represents a section of a roller-caster with my improvement.
A are the feet of the chair or other furni- `ture, 4to which the sockets ,B are attached.
Through these sockets B a rod, C, passes, on
the bottoni ot' which either a knob, D, as/
more india-rubber springs or rings, F, are arranged around the rod G.
It will be Vreadily understood that springs of any desired forni or material may be ap- K plied.
When the knob or roller caster, or both, are attached to the feet or legs of the piece of furniture, sufficient elasticity will be obtained to dispense with stuffed seats or cushions.
At the under side ofthe socket B a leather washer, w, is arranged to retain the grease.
The hole a in the leg A must be made. of sufficient depth to allow free motion for tho head c of the bolt C when the springs are compressed.
What I claim ns my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with furniture-casters, the arrangement of any suitable springs between the roller or knob of' the caster and the socket which is attached to the leg of the furniture, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
2,. The india-rubber rings F, arranged around the arbor of the roller or knob of furniturecasters, situated between the roller or knob and their socket B, substantially as set forth.
FRIEDRICH HELLING.
