Application filed September The present invention relates, asindicated, to kitchen utensils, and more particularly to garbage pails of the type which are adapted to be swung under a sink. The primary object of the invention is to provide novel means for supporting the cover of such a container in its various desirable positions. Further objects will appear as the description proceeds. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle ofthe invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a container constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the cover swung to open position; and Fig. 4: is a fragmental vertical section taken substantially upon the line H of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, it will beseen that the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a container to which is secured, by means of rivets 11, the central or base portion 12 of a bracket memher later to be described. The upper edge of the container is rolled to form a bead 13 as shown. I
A cover member 14 is formed with an upstanding annular flange 15 the upper end of which is folded outwardly as at 16. Said flange 15 is adapted to fit within the bead 13, while the folded portion 16 is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of the bead 13, whereby a suitably tight fit is provided between the container and its cover.
From the lower end of the base portion 12 of the bracket there extends a leg or projection 17 perforated as at 18 adjacent its outer end. At the upper end of the section 12 said bracket is bent outwardly to form a second projection 19 substantially teeters PATENT QFFICE LOUIS J. KAPLAN, OF GREENWICH, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY I IESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE KITCHEN UTENSIL 6.192s. Serial No. 304,191;
parallel' with theprojection 17 and perfo rated adjacent its outer end as at 20. The bracket is bent upwardly as at 21 at the outer end of the projection 19, and then is rebent as at 22 to form a platform having bifurcations 23 extending inwardly therefrom.
A pair of rivets 2 1 or other similar fastening means secure to said cover member 14 a foot 25 of a pivot member which is bent upwardly at 26, laterall at 27, downwardly at 28,"and which is then given reverse bend as at 29 ata point immediately below 'the'plane of the edge lG. The straight portion 30 of the pivot pin is adapt ed to passthrough the apertures 20 and 18 whereby said" cover 14: is swiveled to said bracket. j i j In use, the cover 14 is normally in the position shown in Fig. 1, the relatively tight fit between the cover member 14 and the bead 13 preventing. any material escape of odors-from the container. If,'now,it is desired to open the container, the knob 31 upon the cover member 14 is grasped and the cover member is lifted slightly and swung about'the pivot pin 30 to any desired position between that illustrated in Fig. 1 and that illustrated in Fig. 3. From an inspection of Fig. tfit will be obvious that the cover member cannot be swung outof OHIQ, A CQE-POR-ATION 01 register with; the container top unless said cover member is lifted sufficiently to carry the-shoulder29 above the plane ofthebiswing upon the pivot pin 30 until the shoulder 29comesinto register with the opening between the bifurcations 23.
At this "time, the cover member 14: isin registry with thecontainer 10 and, as the shoulder 29 drops between the bifurcations 23, further swinging movement of the cover is immediately arrested and the whole memto p her drops down into the position shown in ather modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made'as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In combination with a receptacle open at its top, a cover therefor, a stud attached to said cover and having a downwardly directed end, a cam formed on said stud, and a bracket secured to said receptacle and adapted to receive said end, said bracket comprising a laterally extending portion perforated adjacent its outer end, an upwardly extending portion, and an inwardly extending portion, said last-named portion being bifurcated, and said stud end being received between the furcations of said lastnamed portion and in the perforation of said first-named portion.
2. In combination with a receptacle open at its top, a cover therefor, a stud attached to said cover and having a downwardly directed end, a cam formed on said stud, and a bracket secured to said receptacle and adapted to receive said end, said bracket comprising a laterally extending portion perforated adjacent its outer end, an up wardly extending portion, and an inwardly extending portion, said last-named portion beingbifurcated, and said stud end being received in the perforation of said firstnamed portion, and said cam being received between the furcations of said last-named portion.
a 3. In combination with. a receptacle, a bracket secured to said receptacle and comprising an outwardly extending portion formed with a perforation adjacent its outer end, an integral upwardly extending portion projecting from said outer end, and an integral inwardly extending portion projecting from the upper end of said secondnamed portion, said inwardly extending ortion being formed with a slot at its inner end in vertical alignment with said perforation, a cover for said receptacle, a stud secured to said cover and having a downturned leg and a cam formed in said leg, said leg being received in said perforation, and said cam being adapted, in one position of said cover, to be received in said slot, and in all other positions of said cover to ride on the walls defining said slot.-
