IMPROVEMENT IN MlTER-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,454, dated August 1, 1876 5 application filed June 28, 1876.
To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 0. BOWEN, of Warwick, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain Improvements in Miter-Boxes, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention consists in a metal frame for clamp made with a horizontal bar and two upright standards, one at each end, two or more of these frames being used with holes to receive the screws that hold the strip of wood 6 on the bar to form the bottom of the box, and two upright side bars, one on each end of, and at right angles to, the bar that holds the strip 6. These side bars have holes made in them near their upper ends, throughwhich the screws are put to hold the strips 9 g that constitute the sides of the box. The cross-bar is preferably made higher in the middle, so as to allow the sides of the box to extend below the bottom, that there may be more material below the saw scarfs to strengthen the sides. The bottom-strip e, not being required to hold the sides, is made narrower, so as to leave an opening between it and the sides, through which the sawdust made in using the box will pass out.
The use and operation of the clamps will be readily understood, from the drawings and description, by one skilled in the art to which the improvements relate.
A workman is enabled by these means to make a miter-box of stuff of ordinary thickness, while the usual way requires a very thick piece for the bottom. The openings between the bottom and sides allowing the sawdust to escape saves him the trouble of brushing the box out for every piece of work. The
clamps supporting the sides between the sawscarfs allow those openings to be mademuch closer together, so that a shorter box will do, and by taking out the screws the parts may be packed so asto require but little room in the tool-chest. The sides of the clamps are extended down to form legs to make the box stand steadier on the bench.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
As a new article of manufacture, a metal frame or clamp for a miter-box, constructed as herein shown and described.
