MACHINE FOR HANDLING HDLDING SAND Filed Oct. 8. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 t mm- ImimmI I mulllllllll ive/2Z5)" Patented May 12, 1931 ELMER 0. I BEARDSLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,JASSIGNOR TO THE BEA RDSLEY 86 PIPE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, CORPORATION OE ILLINOIS MACHINE FOR HANDLING- ivronnrne SAND Application filed October 8, 1928. Serial No. 311,115.
The invention relates to apparatus for handling sand delivered to molding machines. In foundries, it frequently occurs that scrap or pieces of metal become mixed with the sand that is removed from moulds, which must be separated from the sand before l t/1S delivered to a molding machine of the projector type,
- to prevent injury to the machine.
The primary ob ect of the invention is to provide improved apparatus for handling the sand in'which a magnetic separator is disposed to act-upon the sand as it is discharged.
by an elevator in sufficient quantity tokeep the projector supplied, in transit to the proector.
mittently operated so that the magnetic scrap or parts to be separated fromthe sand will be intermittently moved out of the magnetic zone and separately discharged from the sand during these intermittent movements.
This results in a more effective separation of the scrap from the sand, particularly when'a lar e volume of sand is oassed over the drum..
Other objects of the invention will appear from the detailed descriptlon.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly'deiined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a molding machine, having the invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2--2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. lis a vertical section through the sepa-,
rator drum.
The mventlon 1s exemplified in connection with a channelled supporting column or standard '7 which may be mounted on a portable molding machine of the tractor type set forth in Patent No. 1,408,796. The molding,
sand is elevated from a pile onth-e floor by an elevator comprlsmg a chain 8, the llnks of which have secured theretobuckets 9.
This chain is usually driven by a sprocket. at the lower end of the machine, as exempliof approximately 180,
lied in the aforesaid patent, and its upper end is guided by a pulley 10 mounted on a shaft 11 which is suitably supported from the column 7 The downwardly travelling reach ofothe chain and buckets travel in the channel of the column 7. At the upper end of the column, there is formed a discharge hoodor chute 12. The material from the buckets is discharged downwardly onto a deflector plate .13 in the hood. The drum 14c of a magnetic separator is mounted so one side-thereof will be disposed below plate 13, and-the sand discharged from the buckets will be delivered onto the other side of the drum which rotates downwardly to discharge the The drum sand into a conveyor chute l5. comprlses a peripheral wall 1 11 and sides 14 whichare rotatably mounted on a stationary shaft '16. The side walls of hood 12 are extended downwardly at the sides of the drum to confinethe sand to the drum, and the outer wall 12 of the hood is spacedfrom the discharge side ofthe drum to permit the sand to be discharged downwardly over-the drum. A baffle 17 is spaced fromone side of the drum to deflect the sand toward the discharge sideof the drum. Shaft 16 is supported by brackets 22' which are securedby bolts -23to column 7. Said shaft is secured against rotation by CQPSQA: which are adapted to clamp, by means of bolts 26, the ends-of the shaft, in the angular recesses 25 in the ends of said bracket. A stationary magnet 19, comprising a core and suitable windings, isfiizedly secured to shaft 16 inside of the drum. Conductors 20 lead to and'from said windings, andextend through a hole in said shaft. This magnet is adapted to attract and hold on the drum, magnetic material, such as cast iron scrap metal parts. which,
in practice, frequentl 1 become mixed with, or left in, the molding sand when it is cleaned out of flasks. The magnet is shaped to be effective upon the scrap throughout an are which includes that portion of the drum with which the descending sand contacts, and a suflicient distance beyond the point of discharge of the sand to release the scrap and separately discharge it into achute 21 secured on the column 7.
be separately discharged from the sand, while.
at the same time, operating the drum so that its periphery will not accclerate'the, movement of the sand and scrap suinciently'to render the magnet ineilicient in separting the scrap from the sand. For this purpose, mechanism is provided to rotate-thedrum intermittently or step-by-step. This mecha nism comprises a shaftQS mounted in'bearings 29 which are secured bybolts 29 in brackets 22, a sprocket wheel 30, keyed to drive shaftQS, a d having its teeth engaged by the upwardly anddownwardlyreaches of chain 8, to continuously-r te said-shaft, an eccentricor v 'ist pin 31 or. one end of shaft 28, a pawl pivoted ratchet-wheel 33, which of one of the drum-sides 14: and'is engaged and intermittently advanced by the free end 34 of said pawl, which rides on'the wheel. The wrist-pin alteri'iately op'erates the pawl to engage a tooth "on the ratchet-wheel and rotateor advance the drum one step, and to idly retract the pawl. During the retraction of the pawl, the'drum remains stationary. This mechanism moves the periphery of the drum, during the operativestrokes of pawl 32, so the attracted scrap will pass out of molding sand in large quantities, as'is neces sa'ry to keep a moldingmachine suppliedwith sand for continuous operation, because the slowly'and intermittently moving drum does not accelerate the movement of the sand and scrap. 1 Such acceleration renders the separation inefficient. r
The invention exemplifies a sand handling apparatus which'is particularly adapted for large quantities of molding sand, and in which the separating drum is intermittently operated to attain-the advantages aforesaid.
Theinvention isnot to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope or" the :appended' claims, withoutdeparting from the spirit andscope ofthe invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v I
