Fruit Can.
No. 18,035. Patented Aug. 25. 1857.
AM. P NOTO-LITHO. C0. N.V. (GSBORNE'S PROCESS.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BOEEMAN, OE CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVED METHOD OF HERMETICALLY SEALING lCANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 8,035. dated August 23, 1857.
v lated from the food,) the arrangement affording a Vcentral supporter stay for the bottom and lid, and permitting the employment of a can of large diameter, completely Open at top.
The drawing consists of an axial section of a can on my plan. A
a b are the sides and bottom of my can.
c is a bolt, whose head being made fast to the bottom, its stem is coincident with the axis of the can and terminates nearly liush with its rim. .This stem is screw-threaded at its upper portion to receive a nut, d.
e is a tube, of tin, which, being made fast to the bottom, immediately' outside the point of attachment of the bolt, inolos'es or sheathes the unthreaded portions of the latter. y
The lid is formed as follows: f is a circular plate, perforated at its center to admit the screw-bolt, and corrugated, as represented, so as to stiffen the margin, the outer corrugation aording on the under side a groove, g, of corresponding diameter to the rim, while the whole central portion of its area consists of a shallow depression, 7L, having considerable liexibility.
l is a gasket, which serves to close the joint between the rim and the lid, and is secured to its place by an annular plate, j, soldered at its inner margin to the under side of the plate f.
k is another gasket, which serves to close the joint between the top of the sheath or tube e and the under surface of the lid.
The Operation is as follows:v The lid being placed in position on the can, with the outer gasket, t', resting on the rim, the pliable middle portion, 7L, Of the plate f stands somewhat above its bearing on the4 gasket k, (in a position illustrated by red lines.) The nut d being then screwed down, at first the outer gasket, and finally both gaskets, are confined tightly and uniformly between their respective bearings, and the can is then closed.
The material employed by me for the gaskets is india-rubber; but other pliant and impervious substances may be employed, if preferred.
'I claim as new and of my invention-- The mode, substantially as set forth, of hermetically sealing cans by means of the central screw-stem, c, and sheath e, in the described combination with the pliable lid f g h j, nut d, and gaskets z' and k.
ln testimony of which invention l hereunto set my hand. WILLIAM BORRMAN.
