Description

C. F. JAHNS PIPE COUPL-ING May 5, 1931.
Filed Feb. 8, 1927 Patented May 5,1931
PATENT OFFICE GHA'U'NCEY IE. JAHN S, OF SCHUYLER, NEBRASKA PIPE COUPLING Application filed February 8, 1927. Serial No. 166,749.
The invention relates to couplings for pipes, and has particular reference to couplings used for piping the gasoline supply with carburetors, vacuum tanks, etc. in auto- 7 mobiles, and has for its object the provision of a coupling provided with a wrench carried thereby and adapted to engage the polygonal surface of the coupling, the coupling member being also provided with a circum- 10 ferential groove into which the wrench may Figure 1 is a side view in elevation'of the improved coupling showing the wrench engaging the polygonal surface of the coupling when the coupling is to be turned,
Figure 2, a similar view showing the wrench engaging one of the grooves to permit rotation thereof relatively to the cou-' p V Figure 3 is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figurel, and
Figure 4:, a similar view on a plane indicated by the line 4.4 of Figure 1.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews,
The improved coupling comprises a tubular member 1' having its two extremities provided with flanges 2, the intermediate portion of the coupling having a polygonal surface 3, and the portions adjacent to the flanges 2 provided with grooves 4 having a circular base and connected with the polygo- 40 nal'surface 3 by means ofinclined portions 5. Mounted on the tubular member 1 is a wrench 6 having its head 7 shaped to con form to the polygonal surface 3 so that when the wrench is in engaging position with the surface 3% shown in Figures 1 and '3 the coupling may be turned by manipulating the wrench. When it is desired to rotate the wrench relatively to the coupling it may be movedinto'v either of the grooves 4, or'into the 7 positions shown in Figures 2 and 4c, and 1t may then be rotated to position it for another turn of the coupling, the inclined portions 5 assisting in locating the head of the wrench on the polygonal portion 3 when the wrench is moved from the groove to engage said polygonal portion.
The utility of the device will be apparent, as the coupling will be provided with the proper wrench to turn it for applying the coupling or disconnecting it, and by providing the grooves 4 it will be apparent that the wrench may be manipulated so that the coupling may be applied or disconnected in inconvenient or tight places.
What is claimed is A unitary device of the class described comprising a pipe coupling, a wrenchslidable along said coupling, means on said coupling preventing detachment of the wrench therefrom, the coupling having a substantially polygonal portion engageable by the wrench in one position whereby the latter is operable to turn the coupling, said coupling also having a portion engageable by the wrench in another position wherein the coupling and wrench may be moved relatively'to each other, particularly to enable adjustment of the wrench relatively to the coupling between turning operation of the coupling.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
