IMPROVEMENT IN ICE IMPLEMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,339, dated J uly 25; 1876; application filed November 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS E. HAN- FORD, of Shawangunk, Ulster county, in the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Ice- Cutters, of which the doublefaced head, having a sharpened steel cutting-face cast in the center of one end, while the opposite end is formed with tapering shoulders and a socket for the reception of a handle. 7

But that my invention may be fully understood, I will describe the same in detail by reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of an ice-cutter constructed according to my invention.

In each of the views similar letters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur.

A represents the cutter head, which is formed with two similarly-constructed shovelfaces, a a terminating at one end against the sides of a sharpened steel cutting-face, B, which 'is cast in the center of the end A while the opposite end of the head A is formed with tapering shoulders A terminating in a bearing, D, formed with a socket for the reception of the end of the handle O.

The peculiar construction of my improved cutter enables it to be used in place of the ax, crow-bar, shovel, or spade commonly employed for removing ice or frozen snow from sidewalks or other similar places, the

steel cutting-face B preventing the lower ed ge from being fractured when coming in contact with hard substances, while the head A, owing to its peculiar construction, not only assists the operator by its weight, in causing the face B to penetrate the ice, but also by using either of the faces a a to remove the chips of ice, in the same way as he would with a spade or shovel.

Having thus described my invention, I would have it understood thatI do not claim, broadly, a cutting device formed with a steel cutting-edge formed on or afiixed in one end thereof but What I do'elaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

All ice-cutter constructed with a head, A, having two similarly-formed shovel-faces, a a terminating at one end against the sides of a sharpened steel cuttingblade, 13, in the end of the head A, and at the upper end having tapering shoulders A terminating in a hearing, D, formed with a socket for the end of a handle, 0, the whole being constructed substantially as shown and described.
