IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHING HORSES Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,325, dated July 25, 1876; applicationvfiled May 20, 1876. v

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN K. CRAIG, of Black Jack Grove, in the county of Hopkins and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Horse- Detacher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description .of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of .this specification, and to the letters The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for detaching horses from vehicles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawing, A represents the pole with double-tree B, and on each end of said double-tree is pivoted the single-tree G. In the outer end of each single-tree is a curved pin, a, bent backward, as shown, on which the outer trace is hooked, and prevented from slipping 011' by means of a flat spring, b, attached to the rear side of the whiffletree or single-tree, and bearing against the end of the pin. On the inner end of each single-tree G is fastened a metal sleeve or ferrule, 01, which is slotted horizontally for the passage of the end of the inner trace, said trace being held by means of an L-shaped pin, D, one arm of which passes vertically through the sleeve 01 and the hole in the trace I, as shown. To this arm of the lever a cord or I wire is to be attached, to run back over the dashboard.

By pulling on the-upperend of the lever G.

the two yokebolts D D are simultaneously lifted out of the inner ends of the single-trees, releasing the inner traces, and the single-trees are at once turned on their pivots, so that the outer traces will almost at the same instant slip off from the pins on a, and thus the horses are instantaneously detached from the vehicle.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the single-trees O 0, having their-inner ends slotted and perforated, as described, the yoke-bolts D D, elbowlever G, and spring I, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The bent pins a and springs 11, attached to the outer ends of the single-trees O Q, in combination with the yoke-bolts D D and lever G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
