- Beyond and outwardly of the annular flange 11, the body of the chuck is reduced and extended, as at 13*for a purpose which will be later described.
The exterior surface of the main body portion. 8 is provided with a plurality .of in-- wardly tapered longitudinally extending wedge grooves 14 arranged, equidistantly around the circumference and spaced. apart about 120 in order that three of such grooves will be provided, although it is, of course, understood that a smaller or larger number of grooves'may be formed without departing from the scope of this invention. The deepest part of each groove 14 is disposed adja: cent the inner end of the body portion while thelshallower portions are disposed adjacent the outerpart or annular flange 11, and arearranged in' alignment. with dove-tailed grooves 15 extendinglongitudinally throughout the reducedportion 13 of the body and into the main body portion 8 to a depth greater than the outer ends of the tapered grooves 14 to provide ledges or-shoulders 16 at the juncture of the grooves 14 and 15. These wedges 17 are shaped withedges to fit the dove-tailed grooves 14, and-are provided with concave inner surfaces and convex outer surfaces toconform to the bottoms of the grooves 14 and to the exterior surface of the main body portion of the chuck. In
Fig. 3, it will be observed that the innerlsmall- 'er' ends 'of the Wedgesproject beyond the tive groove 15, and outer convex surfaces,
which project beyond the exterior surface of the reduced body portion 13. The exteriorsurfaces of these segments 20, are all provided with corresponding screw thread ed portions 21 for. a purpose which will be presently described. The connection of the segment knuckles20. with the wedgesl7, provides in effect, an offset at the shoulder 16,
which not only makes for the compactness of the chuck, but for the reduction in expenditure for replacement of the segments 20, should their threads become impaired in use. Inview of the flexibility or loose and detachable connection between the segments 20. and the wedges, and the fact that these two parts are interchangeable with corresponding parts, enables a .reductionin the expense in replacing or repairingthese parts when they become unfit for use, since a segment may be replaced without necessitating the replacement ofa good cooperating wedge 17, or vice versa.
Of course, the integral annular flange 11 of the chuck is provided-with openings 20, di-
rectly above the grooves to provide space for the. operation andv movement of the outer smaller ends of the wedges 17,'when they are actuated by the segments to move them radially and outwardly of the chuck during their expanding movement. vThese wedges 17 will be hereinafter referred to as an expan-' sive and contractile instrumentality mounted upon the body of the chuck. t is obvious that when the segments 20 are moved inwardly of the chuck that corresponding move ment is imparted to the wedges 17, thereby effecting a contraction of the instrumentality,

interchangeable means connected to' said wedges and operatively connected to said adways to operate in said internal groove, and I removable dove-tailed-filler blocks closing recesses and operatively connected to said' member, said interchangeable means having threads by which the wedges are moved. I 14:- A chuck comprising a body, a plurality of wedges slidablymounted upon said body and provided with recesses, an internally threaded collar rotatably mounted upon said body, interchangeable threaded segments slidably mounted upon said body for cooperation with the threads of saidcollar, and said interchangeable segments having angularly disposed ends fitting said" recesses of said Wedges.

second groove in alignment therewith and forming a shoulder therewith, a wedge member slidably mounted in saidfirst groove with its smaller end projecting over said shoulder and provided with a recess, and means for sliding said wedge including aimember slid ably mounted in said second groove and hav- 7 ing a projection entering said recess.

A chuck comprising a cylindricalbody portion provided with a longitudinally ex tending groove, said body having an integral flange provided with an opening in alignment with said groove, an adjusting collar rotat- 1 ably mounted upon said body, and a wedge member slidably mounted in said groove and extending through the opening in said flange to be operatively connected to said collar;
17 A chuck comprising a body, a plurality of wedges slidably mounted thereon, an internally threaded collar rotatably mounted upon 7 said body, and slidable threaded segments cooperating with said collar and having loose connections withsaid wedges, the threads of said segments'cooperating with the collar to move said wedges.
