AIR CLEANER FOR GARBUR ETORS Filed June 20, 1929 In Ventor:
Patented Apr. 28, 1931 nrmmum mnnz. or BnnLm-BnUMscHULENwEe, GERMANY AIR CLEANER FOR OARBURETORS Application filed June 20, 1929, Serial No.
A'ny motoristf will have observed that, when travelling through wooded countries, the motor runs more uniformly and more steadily than when the car is travelling on I dusty roads or on streets in cities in whlch the air is polluted with exhaust gases.
This invention has for its object to obviate this inconvenience. -With this object in view an apparatus is mounted on the pipe for 1 sucking in fresh air for combustion, sa d apparatus designed to purify the fresh 8.11"Sal3 urated with dust or exhaust gases.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanyin drawing in which:
\ ig. 1 is a front elevation of the air filter on the suction Fig. 2 is a the air filter. 1
Fig. 3 shows in side elevation, partly in section'a modification of the a paratus, specially designed for motors wit unprotected carburetor, motor-cycles, Diesel engines and the like.
i Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 the apparatus consists of a-cylindrical casing a with upwardly directed dome-like extension f and connection sleeve 1), all three parts cast in pipe.
ongitudinal section through one piece. The connection sleeve Z) is .fixed' on the suction tube 0 for combustion air of the carburetor d by means of a screw or screws e. The dome-like extension 7 is filled with a liquid extract consisting of an oil, "soluble in water, admixed with pine leaf oil, also soluble in water, oxygenous chemicals being added to the water used for diluting the oil. i
A horizontal partition which separates the dome-like extension f from the cylindrical casing 01 has a longitudinal slot h. In the casing a felt rings 1; are inserted and pressed together and securely held in the casing 01 bymeans of a screw cap l0 screwed on the outer open end of the casing a. The felt rings 2' are thus tightly pressed against the slot 71. and against the inner wall of the circular casing (2, however not so tightly that they lose their absorbing property.
The liquid from the dome-like extension f flows through slot 72. onto the felt rings and 372,497, and in Germany March 18, 1929.-
filters through these felt rings, so that the inner surface of the tube formed by the felt rings is moistened. The combustion air sucked in flows along this moist inner surface of the felt tube and is saturated with the ozone produced by the chemicals so that it flows into the carburetor as improved fresh air.
For-carburetors which, as on motor cycles, are arranged at the side of the motor without a protecting hood, the apparatus as shown in Fig. 3 is used. This apparatus has a bent tube m fixed on the bolted cap is. .Thisbent tube is offset and its wider portion has a felt lining n. On the outer end of tube m a packing disc 2 is secured by means of a screw cap 0 having a large central aperture. The'felt lining is saturated with the same liquid as contained in the dome-like extension f, as prior to the fiXa-. tion of the tube m the felt lining has been dipped into the liquid.
The tube on is bent so that its free end extends parallel to the cylindrical casing a. To remove the dust collected on the inner surface of the felt rings or felt lining the apparatus is removed from the carburetor and'held under a tap of a water main so that it is thoroughly flushed. The domelike extension 7 is closed at the top end by at screw stopper 9.
To increase the percentage of oxygen balls =Z'made of a powder adapted to supply oxygen may be inserted between the several felt rings i 1. An apparatus for removing dust from the combustion air for carburetors and for improving this air, comprising in combination a cyhndrioal casing, a connecting sleeve on the inner end of said casing, and a domelike extension on the top of said casing, said three parts cast inone piece, ,a horizontal partition having a longitudinal slot separatingsaid dome-like extension from said cylindrical'casing, said dome-like extension designed to be filled with an ozone producing liquid,'felt rings in said cylindrical casing,
a cap having an air inlet therein and bolted on the outer end of said casing to compress .said felt rings and press the-same tightly against the lower surface of said horizontal partition and against the inner surface of said cylindrical casing, said felt rings being adapted to absorb the liquid contained" in said dome-like extension through Said slot of said partition so that the inner surface of the tube formed by said felt rings is coated with a liquid which retains the dust contained in the fresh air, purifies this air and saturates the same with ozone.
2. An apparatus as specified in claim 1,
comprising in combination with the bolted cap, a bent tube in communication with the inlet opening of the bolted cap offset so that a wider lower portion is formed which is bent so that its free end extends parallel to said cylindrical casing, and a felt lining in said wider tube portion previously saturated with the liquid contained in said dome-like extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix m si nature.
