Although the novel features which are believed to be characteristic of this invention will particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto, the invention itself, as to its objects and advantages, the mode of its operation and the manner of its organization may better understood by referring to the follpwing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which Fig; 1. is a side elevation of a cutting,

In the following description and' in the,
claims parts will be identified by specific to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the invention is shown as applied to a machine of the above character, comprising a suitable farmework or chassis 10, which is mounted upon running wheels 11 to enable the same to be moved back and forth over a foundry floor. A suitable source of power such as a motor 12 may be mounted upon the framework 10, and supplied with power by suitable means (not shown).
The motor may be operatively connected to the driving mechanism for impelling the machine, and also to the series of reels to be hereinafter described, which may be utilized in raising and lowering the piling screen and the cutting blades. Various control levers 13 may be arranged in readily accessible positions to enable the operator to guide and control the machine.
The particular source of power and controls employed form no part of the present invention, and consequently will not be described in detail. Any suitable type of mechanism, such as is well known in the foundry art, may be employed for this purpose. A A cutting cylinder 20 provided with a series of cutting blades (not shown) may be pivotally mounted at the rear of the frame, in such manner that it may contact with the floor and the loose material thereon, such as sand when in operative position or may be raised into inoperative position when the machine is to be moved from place to place. Suitable mechanism and connecting means may be provided for driving the cutting cylinder 20, said means preferably being under the control of the operator, whereby they may be connected or disconected at will. The particular type of connecting means, however, forms no part of the present invention, but is well known in the art and consequently will not be described in detail.
A piling screen 30 may be mounted at the rear of the cutting cylinder 20, and normally positioned in the line of projection of the material treated by said cylinder. The screen may, however, be pivotally mounted and raised by means of a suitable hoist into in-operative position whereby the free passage of the material being treated is not interfered with, and the same may be allowed to form a pile or row in back of the machine.
Attached to the frame 10 may be a series of vertical and horizontal members to provide suitable supporting means for the above mentioned cutting cylinder and piling screen, and for the various controls for operating the same.
Cylinder 20 may be journalled for movement in a suitable bearing 21 carried upon radialbar 22, said bar being journalled for pivotal movement in bearing 23 which is attached to the frame of the machine in any suitable manner. Radial member 22 is extended as by arm 24 at the end of which a hoisting cable or chain 25 is attached. Cable 25 may be connected to reeling mechanism 26, which is carried by the frame of the machine and operated by the prime mover carried thereby. Suitable control mechanism may be included for connecting and disconnecting reel 26 from the source of power whereby, when the same is connected, cable 25 will be reeled up, causing pivotal movement of bar 22 and cylinder 20 connected thereto about bearing 23 into the position shown in Fig. 2. Hand wheel 27 may also be provided for controlling cable 25 if desired.
Piling screen 30 is mounted upon radial arm 31 which is pivotally attached to frame 10 by a suitable bearing 32. Rod 33 pivotally connects the upper portion of screen 30 with bearing 28 carried by frame 10 preferably below bearing 32, and may provide for slight pivotal movement of said screen when the same is vibrated, as hereinafter described.
Screen 30 is secured to a frame work formed of side members 36 which are pivotally secured to rod 33 as by pin 37. Side members 36 and screen 30, which is attached thereto, are formed of a plurality of steps or horizontal sections against which the sand rests, whereby it is prevented from clogging the lower portions of the screen. Members 36 are provided at their base with a horizontal extension 38 (Figure 5) by means of which horizontal screen 39 is supported.
Screen 39 is inclined from the edges of screen 30 to the center portion thereof and is provided at its extreme portions with screen ings pans 40 (Figure 4) which direct the coarse material or screenings to the side of the machine. Screen 39 is also provided with an upturned lip 41 on the forward portion thereof which prevents the screenings from passing over the edge of the screen and being again picked up by the cutting'blades.
Extensions 38 of frame members 36 are pivotally supported by rod 42 as at pivot point 43, a suitable projection 44 being secured to said members for this purpose.
Rods 42 are pivotally supported at radial arms 31 at a point intermediate of their length. Rods 42 are extended past pivot point 43 and are secured to angle member 45 (Figures 5 and 6) which extends across the entire machine. Sleeves 46 are secured to said angle member 45 and are provided with elongated openings 47 to permit longitudinal movement with respect to rod '48. Bumper block 49 is secured between sleeves 46 and is adapted to contact with rotating cam 50 for shaking the screen.
Cam 50 carried by rod 48 which is supported in suitable bearing 51 located in members 52 (Figure 4) which are secured to radial arms 31. Rod 48 is rotated by bevel gears 53 and 54 (Fig.1) and-associated rotating' rod 55; Gears 54 are mounted at the pivot point of. arm 31 whereby they are capable of operating irrespective of the angular position of said arm and of screen30. Suitable driving means (not shown) may be utilized for imparting movement to gears 54 and operatively connecting said gears to motor-12.
Members 52 are adapted to prevent abrasive material, picked upby the cutting blades,
from being moved laterally and also support angle members 56 which extend transversely of themachine and carryan inclined shroud 57 for directing the material upwardly upon thescreen. Member 52 alsoserves as a support for the screen when the same is in its lower or operative position.
The horizontal baffle 58 (Figs. 1 and 7) is secured between radial arms 31 as by crossed members 59. Battle 58 is provided withan inclined rearwardly extending projection 60 for directing abrasive material upon the screen. Strengthening members 61 may be employed, if desired, for increasing rigidity of the assembly.
The screen assembly may be raised to inoperative position by means of cable 62 which may be connected to radial arm 31 and passed over pulley 6& onto reeling drum 63. Reeling drum 63 may be operated by motor or by any suitable means under the control of the operator. When power is applied to reeling drum 68, the entire screen assemblywill be rotated about bearings 32 and 28 into the position shown in Fig. 2. Due to the location of pivot point 28 the topof screen 30 is depressed from the position which it would otherwise assume should the assembly be pivotedas a rigid unit about pivot point 32.
The total height of the machine is thus re duced.
If the cutting cylinder is operated with the screen in raised position the sand may be thrown directly onto a pile, or if the cutting cylinder should also be raised to inoperative position the machine may be free- 1y moved without disturbing loose material over which it may pass.
In the operation of the above described machine for the purpose of cutting and screening sand, both cutting cylinder 20 and screen 30 may be placed in lowered position,
as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and the machine of the foundry, whereas the coarse particles willbe retained, fall into the lower portion of the screen, and be deposited at the side,
by dust pans 40. As shaft 55 is rotated, a vibrating movement will be imparted to the screen by means of cam 50and bumper-block 4:9 cooperating therewith. The screen suspension is such that the weight'ot the screen causes the bumper block to exert pressure against cam 50. The pressure is consequent- 1y dependent upon the amount of material supported by the screen, whereby a greater mass of material causes a greater shaking movement to be imparted. The steps or horizontal sections oflthe screen prevent the material from immediately' ;falling to the lower portion thereof and enable the entire surface of the screen to aid in separating the coarse and fine particles.
Should it be desired, to merely cutthesand and to purify the same by aeration without screening, the screen may be raised by means ofhoisting drum 63 to the position shown in Fig. 2, while the cutting cylinder 20 may remain in operative position. 'When themachine is thus passed over the floor, the cutting blades will pick up the sand, and after agitating the particles will throw them through the air intoa pile or row at the rear of the machine, the extent of the pile depending upon the-quantity of material picked up and the rate of movement ofthe machine The machine may be freely moved without treating the material by raising both cutting cylinder 20 and screen 30 to the position shown in Fig. 2, whereby they are entirely removed from contact with the floor and prevented from act-ing upon material carried thereby.
This invention provides a simple and practical method of selectively and quickly raising either the cutting cylinder or the piling screen into inoperative position without the employment of expensive mounting or com-' plicated mechanism. The reeling drums for the :screen and cylinder may be readily operated by the driving motor of the machine, and the controls therefor placed in accessible positions whereby they may be instantly available to the operator.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, a practical commercial embodiment of the invention is shown, but such illustrations is primarily for purposes of disclosure, and it will be understood that the structure may be modified in various respects without departure from the broad spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined and claimed.-
' What is claimed is:
1. In a machine ofthe class described, a movable frame, a screen, means for mounting said screen comprising a radial member attached to said screen and pivotally connected to said frame, and means for causing pivotal movement of said radial member whereby said screen-may be moved from operative to iii-operative position.
i 2. In a machine of the class described, a moveable frame, a screen pivotally connected thereto, and means for causing pivotal movement of said screen comprising a hoisting cable and a drum for reeling said cable and moving said screen from operative. to inoperative position.
3. In a machine of the class described, a frame, mounted for movement over a floor, a screen adapted to be moved from operative to in-operative position, means for mounting said screen comprising a radial member attached thereto and pivotally connected to said frame, a hoisting cable for controlling the position of said screen attached to said radial member and connected to a reeling drum, and means for directing material against the surface thereof.
4. In a machine of the classdescribed, a
screen for separating small particles of material from large particles, means for at taching said screen to said machine comprising a radial member, means for loosely connecting said screen to said member, a shroud for directing material against said screen, and a member carried by said radial member and extending below said piling shroud to support the screen for movement over a floor.
5. In a machine of the class described, a screen for separating small particles of material from large particles, means for attaching said screen to said machine comprising a radial member, means for loosely connecting said screen to said radial member, a shroud for directing material against said screen, and means for raising said screen comprising a hoisting cable and a reeling drum cooperating therewith.
6. In a sand cutting, screening and piling machine, ascreen support mounted on said machine, a screen mounted on said support, said support comprising upwardly projecting members at each side of the machine, and
an inclined plate positioned in advance] of said screen to guide sandonto said screen.
7. In a sand cutting, screening and piling machine, a screen support mounted on said machine, a screen mounted on said support,
said support comprising upwardly project-'- in'g members at ,eachside of the machine, said screen having an lnverted V shape and provided with portlons inclined toward said framemembers, an inclined plate secured to' said upwardly projecting members and positioned in advance of said screen to guide sand onto said screen. 8. In a sand cutting, screening and piling machine, ascreen, a frame for supporting said screen, a pair of supporting arms'pivoted at opposite ends to corresponding sides of the machine .and frame,a'nd means for raising said supporting arms to elevate said;
frame and screen into non-operative position. 9. In a sand cutting, screening and piling machine, a frame mounted on sa1d machine,
a screen mounted on said frame, said frame comprising upwardly projecting members on each side, of the machine, said screen having an inverted V shape and provided with portions inclined toward said frame members, and an inclined plate secured to said frame members and positioned in advance of said screen to guide sand ontosaid screen.
10. In a machine of theclass described, a movable frameand a screen pivotally supported thereby, said screen comprising a plurality of substantially vertical sections and substantially horizontal sections located therebetween for impeding the fall of material whereby said material is acted upon by the various parts of the screen and prevented from sliding to the lower portion thereof.
11. In a machine of the class described, a movable frame and a screen pivotally supported thereby, said screen comprising a plurality of substantially vertical sections and a plurality of substantially horizontal sections therebetween whereby material is acted upon by the various parts of the screen and prevented from sliding to the lower portion thereof, andmeans associated with said machine for imparting vibrations to said screen.
12. In a machine of the class described, a movable frame and a screen pivotally supported thereby, said screen comprising a plurality of substantially vertical sections and a plurality of substantially horizontal sections therebetween whereby material is acted upon by the various parts of the screen and prevented from sliding to the lower portion thereof, and means associated with said machine for imparting vibrations to said screen, said means comprising a rotatable cam, and'a bmnper block carried by said screen and contacting with said cam.
13. In a machine of the class described, a movable frame and a screen pivotally supported thereby, said screen comprising a plu- Y said cam.

15. In a sand cutting machine, a screen pivotally mounted thereon, means for raising said screen to inoperative position and means for depressing the top of said screen to reduce the over-all height of said machine.
16. In a sand cutting machine, a screen pivoted thereto, radial arms pivoted to said machine and secured to the upper and lower portions of said screen respectively, the relation of said arms being such that the upper portion of said screen is depressed when raised into inoperative. position.
17. In a sand cutting machine, a stepped screen comprising horizontal and vertical sections, an inverted V shaped horizontal screen at the lower portion of said screen, and screening pans associated with said V shaped screen for depositing screenings laterally of said machine.
18. In a sand cutting machine, a stepped screen comprising horizontal and vertical sections, an inverted V shaped horizontal screen at the lower portion of said screen, and dust pans associated with said V shaped screen for depositing screenings laterally of said machine, the forward end of said V section being provided with an upwardly extending lip to prevent material passing thereover.
19. In a sand cutting machine, a movable screen pivoted thereto having a stepped surface, a V shaped horizontal screen at the lower portion thereof and an inclined shroud associated with said V shaped section for directing material thereon.
20. In a sand cutting machine, a screen pivotally mounted thereon, and a horizontal bafiie plate carried by said machine for preventing material from passing over said screen.
21. In a sand cutting machine, a screen, radial members for pivotally mounting said screen to said machine, and a horizontal baffie secured to said members for directing material against said screen.
22. In a sand cutting machine, a screen, radial members for pivotally mounting said screen to said machine, and a horizontal baffie secured to said members for directing material against said screen, said baflle being provided with a rearwardly extending inclined portion for directing material to the upper portion of said screen.
23. In a sand cutting machine, a screen mounted thereon, an inclined shroud for directing material from said floor onto said screen, and a horizontal battle for preventing material from passing over said screen.
