This invention relates to grinders, and more particularly to grinders especially adapted for grinding feed, such as alfalfa and the like, in which the. feed to be cut is fed to the cutters by rollers, and whereby the cut fodder or hay may be thrown downwardly on top of grinding hammers to be reducedto any desired fineness together with neansfor conveying the finished product into a wagon or bin. 7
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a grinder of'the above mentioned character which is very simple in construction, canbe readily and easily assembled, strong, durable, practical in oper- "ation, thoroughly reliable and efficient in use, and otherwise well adapted for the purpose designed. V

Referring more in detail to thedrawings, it will be seen that the reference character A designates a suitable frame work upon which is supported a suitable feed table B provided with suitable side walls 5, and it will be noted that the framework A is provided with extensions C which extend beyond the forwardend of the feed table 13. supported on the forward edge of the frame A as at 6, and this casing is adapted to extend downwardly and forwardlyand has depending front and rear members 7 and 8.

The casing is so, formed as to provide a relatively wide material receiving throat 9 in which is journaled a pair of feed rollers 10 and 11. The lower roller is preferably permanent in position, and the upper or corrugated roller being free to be raised or lowered. The movable feed roller is externally'provided with sprocket 12 having a chain connection 13 with a sprocket 14, the sprocket 14 being also journaled on a shaft 15 having a gear 16 fixed thereto, which gear 16 is in mesh'with gear 17 of the 'lower feed roller 11. 7
The movable roller 10 is automatically adjusted up and down in guideways 18 to com'- pensate for any irregularities of feeding. The material is then delivered into the path of a cutter head 20 provided with the blade 21. It will be noted that the blades 21 of the cutter head 20 are of the lawn' mower type and that the said cutter head is journaled at the upper end of the casing-18 in relation with respect to the feed roller, and the cutter shaft 22 of the cutter head is suitably journaled in the side walls of the casing and extend beyond the side walls, and
that onlone' end of this cutter shaft 23 is fixed a relatively large pulley 24, while the opposite end of the shafthas fixed thereto agear 25 thepurpose to be hereinafter-morefully set forth. 5 V I The cutmaterial is then thrown by the blade 21 of'the cutter head 20 downwardly and ontop ofthe grinding hammers 26, which hammers 26 ar'e'in the form of elongated spaced arms radiating from a cylinder head.

The casing D is providedwitlr a cylindrically curved perforate screen 31 extending between the supporting members 7 and 8 and constitutes a bottom for'the casing, and thus it will be seen that the material forced or thrown forwardly over the hammers 2,6,will be caused to drop between the screen 31 and the hammers and there ground to its desired fineness to finallydropthrough the screen and be guided by means of the deflectors 32 and 33 carried by the supports 7 and 8 respectively on to the endless conveyor designated generally by the reference character 35 to be delivered to a wagon or bin as the case may be.
A pulley belt 36 being from any suitable source of power is trained over the pulley 29 and it will be noted that the large pulley 24 drops rearwardly of the pulley 29 for rest upon the pulley belt 36 to be driven thereby, while the gear 25 mounted on the opposite end of the cutter shaft 23 meshes with a pinion 37 carried by an arm 38 fixed to one end of a bell crank lever 39 pivotally mounted at 40.
The shaft 23 is also provided with a pinion 41 in mesh with a gear 42, which gear 42 is in turn in mesh in a gear 43 mounted on the shaft 17. A smaller gear 44 is also fixed to the shaft 17 and this smaller gear 44 is adjusted to mesh with a suitable gear 16 mounted on the shaft 15.
The pinion 37 is held in mesh with the gear 25 b means of a rod 45 one end of which is fixer. to the opposite end of the bell crank 39 as at 46, and the opposite end of the rod 45 terminating in a hook adapted to be received in an eye 47 suitably fixed in the frame A.
The pulley 30 also has a pulley belt 48 trained thereover, and the pulley belt 48 is adapted to be associated with the endless conveyor 35 in any suitable manner for operating the conveyor.
The conveyor 35 is adapted to work in an upwardly and forwardly extending trough 49, which trough 49 extends upwardly from the forward end of the extension B and is supported in the inclined position by means of supporting standards 50. The upper end of the trough 49 is provided with a downwardly depending discharge mouth 51 whereby the ground fodder carried upwardly of the trough by means of the elevator or endless conveyor 35 may be deposited in a bin or wagon, as the case may be. 7
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided an improved grinding machine whereby hay and fodder may be thoroughly ground in a thorough and efficient manner and wherein the mechanism comprises comparatively few parts, can be readily' and expeditiously assembled, easily operated and otherwise well adapted to the purpose designed.
Even though I have herein shown and described certain details of the elements of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is fully capable of changes comprehended by the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, a feed table, a casing on one end of the table and extending downwardly and forwardly therefrom, vertical supporting members for supporting the lower forward end of the easing, an inclined trough, an endless conveyor operable in the trough and having its lower end disposed beneath the lower forward end of said casing, said casing having an enlarged intake neck for receiving the material from the feed table, upper and lower feed rollers in the neck, a concaved screen in the lower end of the casing, forming a bottom wall for the casing, rotary elements in the casing cooperating with the screen for grinding the material in the casing, and means for simultaneously operating said feed rollers. said conve or and said rotary elements.
2. In a device of the character described, a feed table, a casing on one end of the table and extending downwardly and forwardly therefrom, vertical supporting members for supporting the lower forward end of the casing, an inclined trough, an endless conveyor operable in the trough and having its lower end disposed beneath the lower forward end of said casing, said casing having an enlarged intake neck for receiving the material from the feed table, upper and lower feed rollers in the neck, a concaved screen in the lower end of the casing, forming a bottom wall for the casing, rotary elements in the casing cooperating with the screen for grind ing the material in the casing, and means for simultaneously operating said feed rollers, said conveyor and said rotary elements, a ro tary blade carrying cutter journaled transversely of the casing between said feed rollers and said rotary elements, and converging deflector plates carried by said vertical supporting members beneath said screen for guiding the ground material onto the said lower end of said conveyor.
