IMPROVEMENT |N FENCE-POSTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180, l 59, dated July 25, 1 76; application filed January 6, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM REYNOLDS, of in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Fence- Post, Qf-Which the following is a specification The object of my invention is to provide a post specially adapted for wire fencing, and also an improved means of securing the Wires. It consists in a peculiar form of post and in the manner of retaining the wires on the post, all as hereinafter fully set forth.

Figure l of my drawing is a cross section view of the body of my post. The dotted lines indicate webs designed to appear at intervals in each of the three triangular grooves or spaces of the ,W form, to strengthen the post. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a complete post, and fully illustrates its construction, and also my improved method of securing the fence-wires to the post.

a b c are three longitudinal ribs, having parallel edges produced by the W form. d g are two corresponding ribs and edges on the opposite side of the post. h h represent webs that connect the ribs a b c d g. m is a ribbed butt tapered downward from the lower web h. This lower web k may be heavy,- and serve as a means of driving the-butt m into the ground by presenting an olfset adapted to receive blows or pressure from a suitable driver. This web also increases the bearing-surface of the butt, and aids in resisting pressure, when the post is set in the ground.

Nos. 1 2 3 represent my wire-fastening device. It consists in forming hook-form catches integral with the post. The catch on the central rib b stands in reverse order from those on the outside ribs a c. ,4" 1' is the wire hooked or looped upon the catches l 2 3, and when it is stretched taut and the ends fastened it cannot escape from the post.

-Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the opposite side of Fig.2, and illustrates how -two of my catches may be used on the ribs d g, to hold the wire 1." r.

My W-form post having a series of wire folding hooks or catches, l 2 3, standing in reverse order to each other, may be cast complete in one piece, and vary in dimensions and Weight, as desired.

I am aware that ribbed posts having pointed butts with radial flanges have been used;

but I claim that my W form post having three longitudinal ribs and edges on one side or face 7 and two on the opposite side is new and advantageous.

I claim as my inventionl. As an improved article of manufacture, I the W-form metallic fence-post provided with the tapering end m and the webs h, substantially as and-for the purposes set forth.
