Description

Patented pr. 21, 1931 PATENT OFFICE ESTHER J'EBN KIEFER, OI WISCONSIN ORNAMENTAL PAPER No Drawing.
The invention relates to ornamental paper.
The object of the invention is to provide a colored, coated, metallic paper of brilliant sheen and high lustre that may be used as a a covering or wrapper for cigarettes, cigars, chewing gum, candy, candy bars and other food products and as a covering for various other articles and which, on account of its metallic characteristics and low cost,
forms an eflicient substitute for so-called tin foil. The invention consists more particularly in a paper of any desired thickness which has a pyroxylin, colored coating consisting of metallic powders, applied to one side therenf, as hereinafter described, the paper thus forming animpervious wrapper, waterproof, moistureproof and airproof, and the coating not having any deleterious or injurious effect upon the material or product that may be wrapped within it. The coating strengthens the paper, rendering it soft and pliable, and it will not crack.
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter set forth and more particularl defined by claim at the conclusion hereog In producing the product embodying the invention, I take a sheet of paper, which may be either thin or thick and either white or colored, and with any suitable apparatus apply a pyroxylin coating or composition to one side thereof. This coating is formed by a pyroizylin solution consisting substantially of a composition containing less than three and one-half per cent. by weight of proxylin dissolved in substantially three arts ether to one part of alcohol and to whlch there has been added a small quantity of castor oil,
- olive oil, parafiin oil or other equivalents. To
0 this solution I add metallic powders, such as copper, bronze, zinc, aluminum, or combinations thereof, in such quantities as ma be requiredto secure the desired effect. ere
girl-1e material is used to enclose food products these metallic powders are carefully selected so as to be free from impurities in1urious to the food product. Furthermore, the coating is on the outer side of the wrapper and the uncoated side ofthe wrapper laced in direct contact with the food prod ilct. Thus 9.
Application filed February 11, 1928. Serial No. 253,792.
great saving is eifected compared to the usual methods of wrapping food products Where a separate sheet of paper is interposed between the material to be wrapped and the wrapper, such as the cheaper grades of foil wrappers.
In place of a composition which has pyroxylin dissolved in ether or alcohol as a base, may use pyroxylin dissolved in acetone, acetate, or esters or compounds formed by the interaction of alcohols and acids, or any other suitable pyroxylin solvent or dilutent, either singly or in combination.
The paper may be white and the coloring obtained from the coloring matter in the coating, or the paper may be of one color and the coating of another color to obtain a blending or combination of two colors to produce a pleasing and unusual eifect.
The paper thus coated is smooth throughout and has a brilliant sheen .and high lustre,
the oil having the effect of softening the paper and giving thin paper a soft, smooth and silky quality such as is possessed by no other coated metallic paper. The softness and pliableness of the paper thus coated prevents the possibility of cracking the coating.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific details hereinbefore described except insofar as such limitations are specified in the claim.
What I claim as my invention is:
As a new article of manufacture, an airproof, moistureproof, waterproof paper havmg one side uniformly coated with a dilute pyroxylin coating including a metallic coloring powder and containing less than three and one-half per cent. of pyroxylin by weight.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
ESTHER JERN KIEFER.
