It is :found in the construction of wire reels desirable to remove one of the heads to slide a acka e of wire or the like from the reel an in or er to provide a construction by which this may be easily accomplished I have rotatably mounted a threaded member in the detachable y head which may threadingly engage a portion extending from the barrel and which may be easily manipulated by radially extending slots in the head through which the cord may be conveniently manipulated; andl the following is a detailed description ot the present embodiment ot this invention and illustrating means by which these advantageous results may be accomplished. With reference to 'the drawings, 10 designates the barrel portion to which is suitably secured a head 11 by means of welding or the like and at the opposite end of the reel a head 12 is detachably mounted. Extending through the barrel 10 is a sleeve 13 which is suitably welded to the head 11 as at 14. The opposite end of this sleeve is supported by a suitable web 15 and is threaded as at 16 at its end. The head 12 is provided l with a rotatable threaded member or nut 17 which has a shouldered portion 18 engaging the outer surface of the head 12 and which has a reduced neck portion 19 extending through an opening in the head 12 withl a collar or ring 20 suitably secured to this neck portion 19 on the opposite side of the head 12 by welding asat 21 to rotatably mount the threaded member or nut17 in the head. Handles 23 extend from the nut 17 to assist in positioning it on the threaded end 16 of the sleeve `to tightly 'bind the head 12 against the end -oir' the barrel 10, 'asillustrated in Figure 3. A stud 24 is fixed in the web 1,5 and extends through an opening 25 inthe head 11 to prevent relative rotation of the head and barrel 10.

The barrel is recessed as at 28 and each of the heads is slotted as a 29 intermediate-the 5 ribs 30 raised thereon, which slot is so'positioned that it extends radially from the recess 28 in the barrel to a point short 'of the l@ wire Wound upon the heel thus providin "gli periphery of the head but which slot extends substantially the thickness of a package of a construction whereby a cord 31 for binding the coils of wire may be laid in the recess 28 with its ends extending through the slots 294 and when the desired amountis wound upon the reel the ends of this cord 31 may be brought together by passing its endthrough the slots 29 and tied as at 32, illustrated diagrammatically in Figure 4 to bindthe package 34. v

I have provided three sets of cooperating depressions and slots by which the package 34 of wire maybe bound in various ositions to prevent its spreading or unwin ing, it being apparent that any desired number '11 of such means for bindinonma bep rovided.

'I'he head may be centralize with relation to the barrel by a plurality ofsuitably ositioned raised'ears 33, as' illustrated igures 1 and 2.

It will be observed that I have provided by my construction above described an economical and easily manipulative removable head for the reel by means of which construction a package of wire wound thereon may be -bound and readily removed therefrom.

6. A reel comprising a tubular barrel, a

head fixed to one end thereof, a sleeve fixed `to said head at one end and extendingthrough and beyond the barrel and threade at its other end, a detachable head, a nut rotatably7 mounted in said detachable head and engageable with the threaded end of said sleeve to force said head against the end of said barrel and secure the same in position.
