RADIO RECEIVING APPARATUS 7 Filed June 25, 1930 3323? G5 55 Q T E w a INVENTOR flfmw Formal BY W A TTORNEY same A 14, 1931 UNI E STATES.
nuns POIOBL, OI LON G ISLAND, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF FORTY-NINE PER CENT '10 PAUL DEIOSSE, OI BROOKLYN, NEW YORK Application filed June 25,
This invention relates to new and useful im rovements in a radio receiving apparatus.
I is of simple durable construction, dependable in use and efiicient in action, and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes a radio receiving system including a filament circuit and a plate circuit, a power circuit for connection with a source of direct or alternating current and connected with said filament and plate circuits and including in series a variable resistance and in parallel the rimary of a transformer having its secon ary connected with a rectifier connected with said plate circuit and a lead from the B minus of the radio receiving system to a point before said variable resistance, and a single pole double throw switch for makin the circuit through said primary or throug said lead, a high inductance electromagnet being connected in parallel in the power circuit for automatically operating said switch according to the passage of alternating or direct current in said power circuit.
The invention also proposes to connect the filaments or the heaters of the vacuum tubes of the radio receiving system in a combination series-multiple for a low consumption of filament.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be hadto the following descri tion and accompanying drawings, and to t e appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly'set forth.
In the accom anying drawing forming a material part 0 this d1sclosure:-
Fig. 1 IS a schematic wiring diagram of a radio receiving apparatus constructed accordin to this invention.
ig. 2 is a schematic wiring dia ram of a pair of tubes connected as propose v Fig. 3 is a schematic wiring diagram of four tubes connected as proposed.
The radio receiving apparatus com rises a radio receiving system 10 including a ament electromagnet 21 being RADIO RECEIVING APPARATUS 1830. Serial I0. 463,609.
circuit 11 and a plate circuit 12, a ower circuit 23 connecte with a source 0 direct or alternating current and connected with said filament and plate circuits and including in series the variable resistance 13 and in parallel the primary 14 of a transformer 15 having a secondary 16 connected with a rectifier 17 connected with said plate circuit 12 and a lead 18 from the input of the filter 30 to a point 19 before said variable resistance 13, and a single pole double throw switch 20 for making the circuit through said primary 14 or through said lead 18, a high inductance connected in parallel in the power circuit for automatically operating said switch according to the passage of alternating or direct current in said power circuit.
The radio receiving system 10 may be of any design and construction and as illustrated on the drawing may easily be recognized by persons skilled in the art. The particular set shown is that of one stage radio amplification, detector, and four stages of audio-amplification. In all six tubes have been shown. The filaments of these tubes are connected in a combination series-multiple as may be seen from a close inspection.
For defining the combination series-multiple connection above referred to Figs. 2 and 3 have been illustrated. In Fig. 2 a pair of vacuum tubes are shown with their filaments connected in series with each other. In Fig. 3 one pair of vacuum tubesare shown connected with their filaments in series with each other and a second pair of tubes with their filaments connected in series with each other, and these two groups are connected in multiples with each other forming the combination series-multiple referred to. In Fig. 1 there are three groups of tubes connected in the combination series-multiple just referred to.
The resistance .13 comprises a fixed resistance 13 and a plurality of taps 24 near its rear end. A single ole rotary type switch 25 is arranged for individuall engagin contacts on the various taps for o taining the adjustment of the resistance. double throw switch 20 comprises a mov- The single polev able ptle 26 engageable with a stationary contact 27 or a second stationary contact 28.
The movable pole 26 is in the lead 18 which connects with the oint 19 to the front of the resistance 13. T e stationary contact 28 is also in the lead 18 for concluding this connection when the pole 26 connects therewith. The stationary contact 27 is connected in series with the primary 14 of the transformer soias to conclude the parallel connection of the primary upon engagement with the movable pole 26.
The high inductance electromagnet 21 1s provided with a winding 28' connected in parallel with the power circuit 23 immediately to the rear of the resistance 13. The core of the, electromagnet draws the movable pole 26 to close the circuit with contact 28 when a direct current flows in the power circuit and a spring 29 draws the pole 26 to close the circuit with the stationary contact 27 when an alternating current flows in the power circuit. The winding of the elect-ro magnet is of high inductance so that an al ternating current cannot fiow therethrough. A filter 30 is connected in the plate circult to the B positive contacts. The secondary 16 of the transformer has a central tap connected with the B minus which is the return of the plate current and return to the filament circuit of the residual and alternating current resent in the filterin system 30. When a irect current flows in t e power circuit 23 the lead which connects with the resistance 13 as shown in Fig. 1 is the ositive lead, while the other lead is the negatlve one. When the power circuit is plugged in a direct current source, the core 0 the electromagnet 2l is magnetized by the passa e of the current through the winding 28 an the core attracts the movable pole 26 to close the circuit with the stationary .pole 28 and cause the positive side of the direct current to fiow to the filter 30 through the lead 18. The current will be filtered and applied to the plates of the vacuum tubes.
The tubes in the radio receiving apparatus are connected in a combination series-multiple, that is, the filament of one tube is connected in series with a second as before described. So the plate current does not feed back through any one of the filaments, the plate current return (or B- minus) is connected at the mid point, that is, between two filaments or heaters as shown in Fig. 2. Then another cup with the filament-or heaters connected in series as shown in Fig. 2 and a balanced plate current return terminal for the B minus is connected in multiples with the first group forming a filament or heater combination series-multiple. There is no change in the filament power supply circuit 23 when the current supply is changed at the input as there is a difierent voltage between the alternating supply and the irect curcurrent feeding back through at least one heater and creating a very undesirable hum in the loud speaker when plugging the radio apparatus receiver in the alternating su pl The reversal of the wiring in the heater Isa s in order to produce a common connection for the B minus and therefore cutting the amperage in two for the power supply by using the series connection.
While I have shown and described the pre ferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
