Our invention relates to improvements in pressure regulators and particularly to that type of regulator for maintaining a uniform pressure in gas service pipes irrespective of the fluctuations of pressure in the supply mains.
It is one of the objects of our invention to provide a regulator of the above type wherein the blow-off will be ellectually sealed under normal conditions but which will respond readily to abnormal increase in pressure and will maintain the release condition of the regulator until the pressure has been properly restored. i
Another object of our invention is to provide a means for eectually seating the intake .valve of the regulator. ther objects and advantages will appear more fully hereinafter.
For the purpose of disclosing our invention- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a regulator embodying' our invention;

ln the structure illustrated the pressure regulator includes a regulator casing having a body portion 1 and a cover 2Vdetachably connected thereto. A flexiblediaphragm 3 is clamped between the body 1 and the cover 2 and is held upwardly by the pressure of the gas on the lower side thereof and against the resistance of a spring Ll, the tension of which be adjusted by a set screw 5.
To the lower side of the diaphragm 3 there is attached one end of a lever 6 pivoted at 7 on a pivot support 8. rlrhis pivot support is formed of stamped sheet metal comprising a blank slotted from its opposite ends by parallel slots toward the interior, the slots however, not ent-ending clear to the inner portion of the stamping. There is thus provided a pair of tongues 9 9 which may be 5 turned downwardly at right ,alglGS l50 the body portion of the support leaving supporting ears lO-lO. The supporting ears provide means for clamping the support in position between the top 2 and the body 1 at the narrowed neck portion of the body, the body being notched out at the mounting point of the support to accommodate these ears. rl`he down turned ears 9 provide forks in which the pivot 'l' is mounted in suitable openings 11 and between which the lever 6 is positioned. rlhis particular construction of this pivot member has desirable advantages as it permits of avery nice adjustment of the parts and extreme accuracy in assembling without excessive labor in the grinding and finishing of the supports, as has heretofore been the case.
The end of the lever adapted to be attached to the diaphragm is provided on its under face with a notch 12 adapted to receive a cross pin 13 on which this end of the lever rests, between ears 111, depending from the diaphragm plate 15. y
'lhe body portion of the regulator is provided with a release opening having an ei:- tended tube 16 terminating in a well l?. En closing the open end of this tube 16 is a movable mercury well or cup 18, having its bottom convexed as at 19 and provided at its upper end with out-turned ears or lugs 20a, which guide the cup in its vertical movements in the well 17. rThe cup is normally held with the con' ered bottom portion seated against the bottom of the tube 16, which bottom portion is immersed in mercury contained in the cup. By this construction a minimum quantity of mercury for sealing the blow-off opening is required. rlhe bottom 19 substantially closes the open end of the tube 1G and the small quantity of mercury need be only suliicient to seal the junction against leaks. 1n event the pressure in the regulator builds up above the desired predetermined point, this pressure acting against the mercury in the tube 16 ant the bottom of the cup will force the bottom 19 olf its seat permitting the pressure to escape through the tube 16 in a blowb rhis forces the mercury up in the cup and in some instances it will even overflow the top of the cup.
