To all 'whom yit may coat-cra: d 't Be it known that I, WILLIAM KIMBLE, of

Alliance, in the county ofStark andState of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvementin Single-Tree and Trace-Fasteners; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe saine, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- Figure l of the drawings is' a representation of ya plan View of my single-tree and tracefastcn'er, and Fig. 2 isa side 'elevation Aof the same. l

This invention relates to single-treesand trace-fasteners, and it consists in a rod 'which connects two pivoted arms, and in tracefastening hooks, which are made intoiclosed loops at will by turning down a pivoted piece, substantially as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying dra-wings, A A designate the shafts oi' thills ofla carriage, and B the cross-bar of said shafts. On the top of crossbar B arms C C are pivoted by their inner ends c c. These ends c are somewhat broadened and rounded, and provided with rear exY tensions or vears c c, on which are pivoted t-lie divided ends of straight i'od D. Io the outer ends of arms C C, I pivot tracefastening hooks E E, which may either' form longitudinal extensions of said arms, or may be thrown forward at right angles therewith. On the back of each of said hooks I pivot apiece, F, which may be turned up to allow the insertion ofthe trace, andturned down to lock it in position. The contiguous ends oi hooks E E and pieces'F Fin each pair are correspondingly beveled, so that a perfect loop. may be formed in each case without any danger oi' hinged piece F falling beiowhook E. Rod D is constructed with ljxed collars l d, which strike against a metal guide-hook, Gr, that isY secured to crossbar B, and thereby limit the longitudinal motion of said rod. H H are protecting-plates, which are secured at both ends to the pivot-bolts of arms C C, and which extend back behind ears c c and the ends of rod D..

'Ihe devices, taken together, will perform the functions of au ordinary whiftletree, while they are incapable of being turned or twisted inany manner. In case theappa-ratus breaks in an)` part the horse will still be lirmly held on one side at least; and if the connecting-rod breaks, he will still be held on both sides.

Man)y slight modiiications may be made without departing from the spirit-of my iuveiition. For instance, a perforated tenoii may be substituted for each otl the divided. ends ot' rod D, and each arm O may be provided with two ears instead of one, so that said teiioiil may be pivoted betweeiiithem. The devices mayalso be used 'as a double-tree, each of hooks E E being employed as a holding-hook fora single-tree.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
