This invention relates to an automatic damper adapted for use in chimneys or discharge fiues or pipes of stoves, furnaces and the like.
The main object is to provide a construc tion of damper which will automatically vary its position to open or close the passageway in order to regulate the draft so as to particularly diminish the draft in the event the stove or furnace unduly heats or overheats, so as to avoid the fire hazard and enable operation with a minimum amount of coal or fuel.
Various additional objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanyin drawings illustrating an operative embod'ment.
In said drawings Figure l is a view illustrating the improved damper in plan, the discharge flue or the like being shown in section and suggested in dotted lines,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the parts of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a detail section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a detail section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is an end view showing the improvements in place within a flue,
Figure 6 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 66 of Figure 1,
Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 1,
Figure 8 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Figure 1, and
Figure 9 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 9-9 of Figure 7.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 desi nates a conventional pipe, chimney or discharge flue leading from a stove, furnace or the like. Within the flue 10 a skeleton frame 11 is disposed either permanently, or frictionally as preferred. The frame 11 has a substantially rectangularsection 12 and a .cross member 13 at one end fastened thereto at 14. At the other end a cross member 15 is fastened to the frame 11, as at 16, the ends being offset as shown.
As a result of the construction described, the thermostats 17 will be affected by heat and under the action thereof will bend inwardly or toward each other, thereby moving the arms 22 and 23 inwardly and ac cordingly tilting damper 25 to restrict the passageway through the flue 10 or the position of the damper 25 var ing automatically according to the degree of heat to which the thermostats 17 are subjected. Q In order to vary the tension of the thermostats to better control the automatic action of the damper 25, either or both of the thermostats 17 may have an adjusting or tensioning device such as is detailed in Fi 8 ure 4. This device comprises a screw threadloosely through the thermostats 17 and wall of the flue 10 but which is screw threaded to part of frame 12 through which it passes. Such adjusting device 33 carries a manipulating handle 34 outside of the conduit 10. Thus the handle 34 may be turned to accordingly cause the thermostats to move therewith or to permit inward yielding thereof. 9
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A device of the class described compris- 1 7 of said members, a damper, pintle members pivoted to the damper, clampmeans carried by said arms to engage said pintle members ing a frame, thermostatic membersextending therefrom, an arm extending from one of said members, an arm pivoted to the other of said members, a damper, pintle members pivoted to the damper, and clamp means carried by said arms to engage said pintle members on opposite sides of the damper.
2. A device of the class described comprising a frame, thermostatic members extending therefrom, an arm extending from one of said members, an arm pivoted to the other on opposite sides of the damper, and means mounted in theframe operable to vary the tension of one of said thermostats.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. WALTER F. JAEGEJR.
