Description

Apfil 7, 1931. s. NAKAHARA CLIP FOR FOUNTAIN-FEMS OR THE LIKE Filed Sept. 29, 1930 I T v T Z A l l I a \l mmmm h j? l INVENTQ r: WW" BY ATTORN Patented Apr. 7, 1931 PATENT OFFICE SAIDA'YOSHI NAKAHARA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLIP FOR FOUNTAIN PENS OR THE LIKE Application filed September This improvement relates more particularly to an improved clip for fountain pens, mechanical pencils and the like, wherein a ball clip is provided for holding the pen or pencil attached to the pocket or to some other part of the clothing.
Clips of this character for fountain pens or the like are usually secured to the barrel or barrel cap by means of rivets or other similar means, which are more or less unsightly and the clips cannot be readily attached or replaced.
The object of the present improvement is to provide novel means of attaching the clip whereby the attaching means is concealed,
thus producing a neat appearing article.
A further object is to provide simple means for attaching the clip, preferably consisting of a screw-threaded member on the end of the barrel, cooperating with an annular flange or groove for holding the clip in fixed relation to the barrel and the end of the clip in cooperative relation with the screw-threaded member, that is the clip is adapted to be 2 held in place by the flange and the clamping efiect of the screw-thread-ed member. This construction not only provides an efficient means for securing the clip to the pen or pencil, but provides a ready means permitting the clipto be replaced if it becomes broken or damaged or if it otherwise becomes necessary to replace the clip.
The preferred form of the improvement r is more particularly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side View of the clip attached to a fountain pen barrel cap; Fig. 2- isa front view of the clip and cap as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is another side view of the clip and barrel cap with the barrel and cap nut and the upper portion of the clip in section; Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the disassembled parts of the clip, barrel and cap nut; Fig. 5 is an end view of the barrel and clip with the cap nut re- 29 1930. moved and Fig. 6 is abottom or underside view of the cap nut.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the improvement is shown in connection with a fountaln pen barrel or barrel cap A, 5
nut D preferably knurled and of the same di- V ameter as the end of the barrel, is provided with a central screw-threaded opening E for cooperation with the screw-threaded stud O. In the present instance, the underside of the cap nut D is formed with a circular recess F producing an annular cylindrical flange G extending about the lower face of the nut, as indicated in Figs. 4 and 6. An arc-portion at H of the fiangeis cut away, the ends of the flange at the cut-out portion being preferably in radial planes, asindicated at K. i
The clip L may be punched out of sheet metal in the usual way and provided at its lower end with the usual ball M, which may be integral or otherwise, as desired. The upper end of the clip is bent at N, substantially at right angles to the part L, and is punched or formed with a semi-circular arouate portion 0, adapted to fit in the recess F of the cap nut, adjacent the flange G. The portion 0 is preferably provided with a hole or cut-out portion at P, which is adapted to cooperate with the screw stud C and fit closely thereabout, while the semi-circular outer edge of the portion 0 is adapted to fit closely in the recess F against the flange G.
. Also, it will be seen, particularly from Fig. 5, that the bent-over portion of the clip between the bend N and the semi-circularportion 0 isformed wedge-shaped with its edges at R in radial planes corresponding with the radial lanes or edges K (Fig. 6) of the annular ange G on the cap nut D.
Accordingly the clip is provided with a port-ion extending transversely ofthe end of the barrel and is secured thereto by the screwthreaded member, the clip being held in place by the annular flange or screw-threaded stud, and in fixed position by the radially cut-out portion.
- Fromithe above, it vwill be understood that for attaching or removing the clip, the procedure is comparatively simple. F or attaching the clip, the upper endof the clip 0, P, B is inserted in the recess with edges R in contact with the walls K of the out out portion for retaining the clip in fixed relation to the barrel.
3. In a fountain pen or the like, the combination with the barrel, of a screw-threaded stud extending axially from the end of the barrel, a cap nut cooperating with said thread ed stud, an annular flange on said cap nut, said flange being provided with a radial opening and a clip provided with a lateral portion adapted to extend through said radial opening and formed with an arcuate portion cooperating with said threaded stud for securing the clip to the barrel when the cap nut is screwed down. 7
SADAYOSHI NAKAI-IARA.
tion 1-1, after which the cap nut D is screwed down on the screw-threaded stud C, thereby clampingthe upper transverse end of the clip to the end of the barrel between the flange G and the screw-threaded stud C, substantially as shownin Figs. 1, 2 and 3. When it is 'desired to remove the clip, the cap nut D is unscrewed enough torelease the clip after which it may be readily removed and replaced with another clip or left off entirely if noclip is needed. 7
While the flange G and recess F are shown on the 'cap nut, it will be understood as a mere reversal to place them on the upper end of the barrelan'd while the opening in the flange is provided with wedge-shaped or radial edges for providing a wedging effect in holding the clip inposition, this opening may have parallel edges or be form'ed othe rwise if desired.
' Furthermore, it-will be understood that various modifications in the details of con struction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. r
