,AWNING FIXTURE Application lged February 11, 1980. Serial No. 427,538.
- The invention. relates y to awnings, and.
more particularly to means torsupporting the'rollers of awnings utilized for protecting or 'shading .store fronts.
The present types 4of awnings usually have their rollers journaled at one end ina simple bearing'iorming'part of va fixture having a bracket or 'base plate which is attached either toan upright member or to a top crossbar member of a store :front Window frame.; and at the other end in a combination bearing and gear box fixture having a bracket or base plate also attached .either vto an uprightmemer or toa topcross :bar member of a store front window'frame.
T However, diiculties are .encountered in erecting an awnin for a store front next adjacent to .an exlsting Vawning protected store front, in order to accomplish maximum coverage ofthe new storefront; because the exietingadjacent bearing fixture` or `gear box fixture, as the case vmay be, of the present t pes Vinterfere with the proper placement .of e fixtures for .the awning roller beingerect.-v ed'whenisuch fixtures arealso of the present ty'ss. L L y. Y
y weaver, great diculties are encoun1 tere'd in erectin newl fawnin s when it hap.- pens that an a jacent existlng awning has its adjacent fixture mounted on a dividing window frame upright member, which upright member'lias a'widthLequal'to or sli hty-figreater thanv the width of 'the gear'. ox xture, becausetthe existin fixture occupies the' only space @that couldie utilized bythe new digitare. Under such' .circumstances a special type of'ixture is required which must be attachedtoa window fra-me top cross 'bar member as distinguished from the upright member. l lAccordingly, one of thevobjects of the pres entY invention "is to provide an awning roller fix-ture the base plate of which may be attalgied either .to an upright member or atop cross' bar member of a-store front window frame as to accomplish maximum coverage ofthe store front. y vaAnotherobject of the invention is to provide-an adjustable fixture wh'ichmayl at'-y tacheddneither-of two positions tola'wjndow frame .crossbar member, or in either ot two osltions to a window 'trame upright memer. y A
And inally, an object of the present in.- vention is to provide a safe, economical, and practical awning roller lixture.
These and other .objects are attained by the presentl invention, as is 'hereinafter claimed, andwhi'ch may be statedin general terms as including an` awning ixturebcaring member, a base plate therefor, and means for .connecting and supporting lthebearing member on the base plate in any one of a plurality of fixed predetermined positions.
A preferred embodiment of the `invention= is shown in the accompanying drawings fin.

. The invention is shown as applied to a' com.; bination bearing and-gear boxV type of fix.- ture generally 4indicated at 11, which. is com` nected to andnsup'port'edon the fixture -base plate v1i?, ;f and the gear box mayv preferably include upper and lower bearing member-s 13 and 14, in 'which .'are'jou'rnaled the .worm
15 having a preferably vertical axis, and the worm wheel 16 meshing with the worm 15 and having a preferably horizontal axis. The upper and lower bearing members 13 and 14 are preferably connected together by nuts, bolts and lock washers 17 and 18.
The worm wheel W16 may have formed` therein a squared axial opening 19 for receiving the squared end 2O ofthe awning roller attaching member 21. A gudgeon 22`is preferably attached to the member 21 and the awning roller 23 is preferably supported at one end on the gudgeon 22."
As shown in Fig. 5, the awning roller 23 is supported at its other end on a gudgeon 22 which is secured to an attaching member 21 journaled in a simple bearing fixture 11a. An awning covering 24 is rolled on the roller 23 and has a' U-shaped frame 25 fastened at one edge thereof, which frame is preferably hin ed in bearings 26.
ne end 27 of the integral worm shaft preferably projects through thel lower bear-V ing member 14 andhas attached thereto a hook 28 held in place by the set screw 29. A hook similar to the hook 28 may be provided at one end of a portable winding shaft (not shown), which may be engaged with the hook 28 for rotating the worm 15, the worm wheel land connected roller 23, for raising or lowering the awning covering 24.
The parts thus far described are standard awning parts and form no part Yof my invention, excepting as hereinafter set forth, and have been illustrated and described in order that the invention may be thoroughly understood. The. invention pertains to the adjustable base plate 1.2 for the awning fixture and to the manner in which the awning fixture 11 is adjustablylconnected and supported on the base plate 12.
The lower bearing member 14 is preferably provided with a rear ,wall 30 which has a ver-- tically extending rearwardly projecting rib 31 from the outer end of which integrally extends a horizontal cross rib 32 spaced from the rear face of the rear wall 30.
The base plate 12 is preferably forwardly paneled at33 and the paneled face or portion 34 projects in parallel `oset relation to the base. plate and is provided ywith a cross-shaped opening 35 best shown in Figs. 2 and 7. The angled ribs 31 and 32 are inserted through the cross-shaped opening 35 and. are then moved downwardly to the positionl shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 for supporting the fixture 11 on the base plate 12.
In this position the front face of the rib 32 engages the rear face of the paneled portion 34while the rear faceof the rear wall 30 engages Vthe front faceof the paneled portion 34, and the vertical rib 31 extends through the vertical portion ofthe cross-shaped slot A The rear wall 30 is provided vwith a notch l36 preferably in vertical alignment with the k41, a nutl 42, and upper part of the vertical portion lof the cross-shapedopening 35`cooperateV withthe boltfor connecting the'fixture 11 on the base plate 12, in supported position.
Because the opening 35 is cross-shaped, as wellshown in Figs. 2 and 7 the ribs 31 and 32 of the fixture 11 may be inserted through the opening lin any one of four fixed .predetermined positions spaced ninety degrees' apart so that the ,base plate will assume any one of the four positions shown either vin full or in dot-dash lines in Fig. 1.
. Thus ythe iixturemay be attached to :any upright or cross bar vwindow frame member 43 by screws 44 without the necessity of pro. viding a special type of fixture when it may be neces-sary to position the fixture base plate in any. of the positions shownin Fig. 1 be-.
cause of particular circumstancesof each individual awning. installation.
It can be readily understood that the fixture to which the present invention is applied need not necessarily include a worm and worm` wheel, but a simple bearing member may be provided with ribs such as 31 and 32 which may cooperate witha base plate 9y as shown in Fig. 7 for being l-supported and connected theretoin .any one off four positions. y i f Y v It is pointed out'that ifrfor any reason the nut 42 should become unloosened or detached from the bolt 37, the xture member 11 will still remain supported by the base plate 12 against downward or. sidewa-rd movement by the action of theribs 31 and'32 cooperating with the cross-shaped slot 35 and base plate wall34. f "1 1. An awning fixture member, a' base plate member for the xture member, and mean-s for supporting one of the members on the other memberincluding a wall; on one of the members, there being a cross-shaped opening formed in the wall, and `crossed ribs on the other member insertible through the opening andy cooperating with the wall. 1
2. An awning fixture including ya casing having a rear wall, a base plate for the fixture having a wall provided witha cross-shaped opening, and crossed ribs extendingy rearwardly from the rear wall insertiblel through the opening cooperating with the base plate wall for Vsupporting the fixture on the base plata Y e v.
3. 4. An awning fixtureV including a base plate member having a base portion adapted to be secured to a window frame member in any one of a plurality of fixed predetermined positions, a fixture member, the base plate member having a xture member attaching portion extendin in parallel relation with the base portion t ereof,y and means for slidably attaching the fixture member to the base member attaching portion in one predetermined position regardless of the fixed prelleitermined position of the base plate mem- In testimony that I claim` the above, IV
