MANUFACTURING TWO-WAY ELECTRIC SOCKETS hpplication flled October 29, 1929. Serial No. 403,201.
of this kind are sold at low prices and that an important item of their manufacturing cost is the final assembling of all the parts 10 comprising the article. The present invention materially reduces this cost, besides eliminating certain parts formerly indispensable in the assembling. I
The following description and the ac com- 3L5 panyin drawing of atwo-way socket assemble in'accordance to the invention will make this saving evident. In the drawing Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional side view of the socket; f
Fig. 2 is a bottom view taken in the direction shown, by line 2-2, in Fig. 1; and 7 Figs. 3, 4c and 5 are,- respectively, a side, front and top view of one of the threaded metal sockets used in the device.
Referring now to/allthe views, simultaneously, is the body member-which is madeof any suitable insulating material and consists of two socket members 11 and a holvlow plug 12.. Y to The ch'amberltt formed in the plug is separated from the socket chambers by the webs 1a which, except for the rectangular openlugs 15 and the center hole 16, completely cover the chambers; The plug has two seats 17 out in its upper rim and an external shoulder 18.
The threaded metal sockets 19., which are v inserted in the socket chamber, are plainly shown in Figs. 3, t and 5. A tongue or strip 20 is sheared from the metal of which these sockets are made and this strip is passed through one of the rectangular openings 15 formed in thd web 14 and the'end is bent over one of the seats 17, as plainly shown in Fig.
cut in the sockets; by these meansthe sockets are correctly located and prevented from rotatm when a lamp or plug is inserted. Y
' A shaped, metalclamp .23 rests on top 1 of the bent ends of thestrips 20 and a thread- 1. Lugs 21 are cast on the web and slots 22- ed metal ferrule 24 is placed over the end of the plug 12. An insulating washer 25 is placed on top of the ferrule and insulating washers 26 are placed inside the sockets 19. All the parts are finally assembled by the bolt 27' which is screwed into the doubleended clamp 28. ,The ends of this clamp effectively hold the sockets 19 against the web It has. always formerly been necessary to secure the sockets against the web by inserting eyelets or other fastening means at the points marked A. It is evident that in the present case these eyelets can be omitted. This efiects a considerable saving as the operations of inserting and rivetingthese eyelets are slow and tedious.
Having described my invention and its operation, what I claim as new and wish to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. The process of manufacturing two-way sockets which consists in moulding an insulating body member consisting of two socket chambers and a hollow plug which is sepa rated from the socket chambers by webs each of which contains a narrow opening; inserting threaded metal sockets, each formed from a circular blank and so constructed as to provide a long connecting strip at its inner end, in the said socket chambers in such a manner that the connecting strips project through the web openings and into the hollow plug;
bending the ends of said strips over the edge of the hollow plug; securing the bent ends by all-shaped metal clamp; placing a threaded metal ferrule over the open end of the plug; placing a double-ended metal clamp inside the metal sockets; and securing all the parts by a screw which passes, t rough holes formed in the ferrule and the aforementioned webs and which is threaded-in the .doub1e-.
ended clamp; insulating washers being inserted under the head of the screw and under the double-ended clamp.
2. The process of manufacturing two-way sockets which consists in making an insulating body member consisting of two socket chambers and a hollow plug provided at its open end with two oppositely disposed grooves and separated from the socket chambers by webs each of which contains a narrow opening; inserting threaded metal sockets, each formed from a circular blank and so constructed as to provide a long connecting strip at its inner end, in said socket chambers in such a manner that the connecting strips project through the web openings and into the hollow plug; bending the ends of said strips over the edge of the hollow plug so as to place them in the grooves formed therein; securing the bent ends by placing a U-shaped clamping member thereon; placing a threaded metal ferrule over the open end of the plug and in electric contact with the ends of the strips; placing a double-ended metal clamp inside the metal sockets; and securing all the parts by means of a screw which passes through holes in the ferrule and in the webs and is threaded in the double-ended clamp; insulating washers being inserted under the head of the screw and under the double-ended clamp.
3. The process of manufacturing two-way sockets which consists in moulding an insulating body member consisting of two socket chambers in which arev contained locating lugs and a hollow plug which is separated from the socket chambers by webs each of which is pierced by an opening; inserting threaded metal sockets, each formed from a circular blank and so constructed as to provide a long connecting strip at its inner end and slots engageable upon said aforementioned lugs, in said socket chambers in such a manner that the connecting strips project through the web openings and into the hollow plug; bending the ends over the edge of the plug; securing the bent over ends by a U- shaped metal clamp; placing a threaded metal ferrule over the open end of the hollow plug; placing a double-ended metal clamping member inside the metal sockets; and securing all the parts by means of a screw which passes through the ferrule and the webs and is threaded in the double-ended clamp; and the parts insulated from each other by insulating washers.
