Description

Marh 31, l931- J. w. ROBERTSON VENTILATOR Filed Feb. 13 19150 ln/vento@ I W oeson Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE i JOHN WILL ROBERTSON, F ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA VENTILATOR Application led February 13, Y1930. Serial No. V428,119.
therewith a closure member to render the ventilator inoperative when desired as in low temperature, and wherein the device has disposed thereover a screen element to prevent nkgress of insects, rodents, reptiles or .the
1 e. i a
The invention consists in the details of con struction and in `the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved ventilator whereby certain important advantages are attained and thedevice rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a ventilator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the associated portion of the building wall being diagrammatically indicated by broken lin-es;
Y Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the device as illustrated in Figure 1, the adjacent wall portion being also diagrammatically indicated by broken lines.
As herein disclosed, my improved ventilator comprises a grid body B of desired dimensions and design and which is provided along its Vupper marginal portion with a laterally disposed arched flange or bar l, said bar or flange projecting, as at 2, a desired distance beyond each end of the body B to be set within mortar joints comprised in a wallv structure or otherwise anchored to assure an effective mounting of the device in applied or working position. Y l
The lower marginal portion of the body B at its ends is also provided with outstanding lugs 3 to be engaged within mortar joints or marginal otherwise to further assure the desired maintenance ofthe body B in place.
The body B at its opposite ends and closely adjacent 'its lower margin isprovided with the lugs 4 disposed in the same general direc- 55 tion as the bar or arch 1 and which provide mountings for the opposite ends of a rod 5. This rod 5 serves as a pintle for the lower portion of a closure member or shutter S. t
This shutter S, as herein disclosed,A is formed of-V sheet metal and has its lower marginal portion rolled to form abarrel 6 surrounding -the rod,` or pintle 5 whereby the closure member or shutter S is supported in effective position for swinging movement toward or from the body B. When at the limit of its movement toward the body B, the closure member or shutter S is closely adjacent thereto so that when in such adjustment the closure member or shutter'closes the ingress of air through the grid body B which is particularly desirable in cold weather. When closed the closure'member or shutter S also prevents ingress within a cellar or other portion of the building of insects, rodents, reptiles or the like.
The upper marginal portion of the closure member or shutter S at its longitudinal center is provided with an eye member 7 with 80 which is freely engaged an end portion of an operatingrod 8. Y This rod 8 is of a length to extend through one ofthe openings within the grid body and saidouter end portion is enlarged, as at 9, to provide Aan effective hand grasp and at the same time to provide a stop for coaction with the grid body B for limiting the swinging movement of the closure member or shutter S in a direction away from the body B or in its opening movement. When the closure member or shutter S is in full closed position, it is to be noted that this operating rod 8 is substantially concealed within a vertically disposed opening l() resulting from the grid design.
Disposed over the inner face of the grid body B and immediately adjacent thereto is al screen element 11 provided with an opening 12 Vthrough which the operating rod 8 has free movement toeffect the desired open- 100 ing and closing of the member or shutter S. This screen element provides eiective means When the closure member or shutter S is in open position to obstruct the entrance of insects, rodents, reptiles and the like.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a ventilator constructed in accordance With my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be assembled and operated, and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification With out departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A ventilator of the class described compris- Ving a grid body having outstanding eXtensions `at its opposite ends to provide securing means, a shutter operatively engaged With the grid body, a rod operatively engaged With the shutter and extending through the grid body, the Outer end of the rod carrying means coacting with the grid body for limiting the movement of the shutter in a direction away from the body., said grid body having an elongated opening in Which the rod is substantially concealed when the shutter is in closed position with respect to the grid body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiX my signature.
JOHN WILL ROBERTSON.
