March 31, 1931. H. ELSNER RIVETING MACHINE Filed Aug. 26, 1929 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNEED STATES HEINRICH ELSNER, OF DRESDE N, GERMANY RIVETING MACHINE Application filed August 26, 1929, Serial No. 388,466, and in Germany May 4, 1929.
The present invention relates to a riveting machine of the type, in which the rivets are fed directly to the lower tool, and has for its object to provide an upper and lower tool constructed so that the rivet is properly fixed when the job is put over its upwardly proecting shank and disengaged during the riveting step when the head is formed and the union with the job effected. The invention can be applied to all sorts of riveting machines, in which the rivets are fed directly to the lower tool, without regard to the manner of feeding.
According to the invention, the rivet disposed within a cam-like lower tool is released by the descending upper tool which is provided with a casing slidingly positioned thereon and adapted to be depressed by springs, to place itself on the work during the downward stroke of the upper tool to enclose the shank of the rivet, and to cause the release of the rivet, whereupon the portion of the shank projecting beyond the work is formed into a head by the upper tool. The
lower tool receiving the rivet is provided with a dolly and carries a casing adapted to be displaced in the direction of the axis of the lower tool and fitted with cushioned jaws so that the latter are spread apart by the camlike lower tool during their descent. As soon as the rivet has been released in the manner described, the head positioned in the dolly of the lower tool will be placed directly on the work.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic front view of a riveting machine, in which the rivets are fed to the lower tool by the descent of a feeding device; Fig. 2, a corresponding side View; and Figs. 3 to 5 show the cooperation of the upper and lower tool in various working positions.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a machine arm within which the upper tool is moved or guided up and down. 2 is another machine arm for the reception of the lower tool. 3 is adrum of known type for receiving the rivets 4, and 5 is the feeding device for the rivets and provided with a lower part 5a adapted to move up and down to feed the rivets directly to the lower tool. After being fed to the latter the rivet shanks project upwardly therefrom.
The upper tool consists of the set 6 sliding- 1y surrounded by a casing 7 which is continually depressed by the compression spring 8. 9 is the work to be worked and is provided with holes which are put over the upwardly extending shanks of the rivets 4:. The lower tool receiving the rivet is fitted with a dolly 10. The lower tool is shaped like a cam at 11, and the dolly or the lower tool carries a casing 12 which can be displaced in the direction of the axis of the lower tool and which is subjected to the action of the compression springs 13. In addition, the casing 12 carries rotatable jaws 14 which are drawn together by the spring 15.
The device functions as follows:
During the descent of the upper tool 6 the casing 7 of the latter places itself on the work 9 and, simultaneously, encloses the the shank of the rivet. During the further descent the casing 7 pushes the work 9 downward and thus depresses the jaws 14: with the casing 12 against the action of the springs 13, the jaws l4 sliding over the earn-like portions of the lower tool 10 and are spread apart against the action of the tensi-ru spring 15. Finally, the work 9 lies with its lower surface on the head of the rivet 4:, and the upper tool 6, following the movement of the casing 7, forms the closing head above the work 9.
I claim 1. A riveting machine comprising a lower tool, means to retain a rivet thereon, means to feed rivets thereto, an upper tool, means to reciprocate said upper tool, and a casing slidingly disposed on the upper tool and spring-pressed downwardly, said casing, upon downward movement of the upper tool, being adapted to contact work disposed between the tools and to depress the work to cause the shank of a rivet held on the lower tool toenter the casing and to cause the release of the rivet from the retaining means on the lower tool.
2. In combination with a riveting machine according to claim 1 in which the lower tool is formed With a cam portion and in Which the retaining means for the rivet on the lower tool comprises an axially reciprocable casing carrying jaws spring-pressed together and having projections engaging the cam portion of thelower tool upon the depression of the Work.
