IMPROVEMENT IN ANlMAL-MUZZLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,890, dated July 18, 1876; application filed January '7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUFUS K.,BLODGETT, of Morrison, in' the county of VVhitesides and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Animal -Muzzle, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device for preventing calves from sucking cows, and for preventing cows and other stock from sucking themselves or each other, and which shall be simple in construction, reliable in use, and conveniently applied.
The invention consists in an improved animal-muzzle formed of the suspended plate,
the hinged loops, and the wire spring-clamp,
as hereinafter fully described.
A is a plate of sheet metal of suitable size, according to the size of the animal to which it is to be applied. To the upper corners of the plate A are attached wire loops B, to serve as hinges to connect the plate A with the.
clamp O. The clamp O is made of springwire, extending along the upper edge of the plate A,'and is bent into coils c at the ends of the said plate A, to give it elasticity and to form loops to receive the hinge-loops B. The end parts of the wire 0 project toward each other and curve upward until they nearly meet, to form smooth rings or knobs to rest against the opposite sides of the cartilage of the animals nose, so as to suspend themuzzle without hurting the animal in the least. Instead of the coils c, the middle part of the wire 0 alongthe upper edge of the plate A may be bent-into a spiral form to obtain the necessary elasticity. In this case the hingeloops B may pass around the wire 0 at the end of its spiral coil. With this construction the muzzle A B 0 will prevent the animal to which it may be applied from suckingitself or another, will allow the animal to eat and drink freely, and may be worn withoutpain or inconvenience.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- The calf-muzzle or anti-sucking attachment herein described, consisting of the wire springclamp O and the plate A,pivoted to the horizontal rod of the clamp G by loops B as and for the purpose set forth.
