Description

March 31, 1931. c s o so 1,798,897
` MOLDING Filed Nov. l, 1929 Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES CHARLES S. OLSON, OF IDUIl'TH, MINNESOTA MOLDING Application filed November 1, 1929. {Serial No. %03,959.
This invention relates to linoleum molding, the rincipal object being to provide a Waterproof molding or keeper about the marginal edges of the linoleum covering 011 a floor.
Another object is to produce such an anclioring molding or seal requirng no nails, tacks, or fastening means whatsoever, permitting of expanson and contraction of the linoleum Without in any manner j eopard izing the joint around the edges thereof.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description thereof.
Referring now to the aocompanying drawing, forming part of this application, and Wherein like reference characters indicate like parts The illustraton is a ragmental perspective View adjacent one corner of a floor coverecl With linoleum, and to which one` embodiment of my invention is applied.
In the drawing, 1 represents the base or mop board of a room and 2 the floor thereof, While 3 represents the linoleum on the floor. The novel border molding comprises the major angularly shaped member of non-corresive sheet metal such as spring brass or the like, the upright Wall of which is illustrated at 4, the base at 5, and crown or head portion at 6; this latter projectng at right angles to the wall 4 and bent doWnWardly either in the form of multiple angles or arcuately as preferred, thence upwardly and inwardly as at 7 forming a V-shaped notch longitudinally thereof, and preferably again shaped to form a second notch as at 8, spaced beneath the notch 7 From here the member is shapecl parallel with the back and extends down- Wardly some distance as at 9, thence inwardly at right angles as at 10 forming a stop member normally slightly spaced from the back 4 to provide yieldability of the croWn or head member 6.
The cooperative or minor member of the molding conprises an angularly shaped strip of like metal having the fiat angularly disposed Wall 11 bent as at 12 forming the vertieal face 13, thence inwardly towards the wall portion 11 but at a lesser angle, thence downwardly as at M forming the lip 15 'or cngagement With the npper surface of the lmolenn in eon uncton With the angle 16 at the lower edge of the vertical face 13.
As it is Well known that linoleuin is to be i had in diller-ont tl'icknesses, I have provided the double notch tor the reception of the up per edge ot the removable minorportion oi" `the molding to accomnodate same.
i "In the application 'of the devce the major molding is first placed about the corners of the floor 'With its back against the base board 1, When the linoleum islaid in the usual manner and secured either by cementing or otherwise as preterred, When all that is neoessary to make 3- positively Waterproof joint about the edges thereof is to spring' into place the minor molding as previously described; it having suiicient resiliency together With that of the head portion of the major memmolding I have provided the one indicated at 17 already shaped to overlap the combined members of the molding, abut directly upon the upper surface of the linoleum, and spring into position about the head portion of the major member, thus requiring no nails or fastening means of any kind, and resulting in a neat, secure, and pleasing appearance of such a corner; permitting also of the cutting of both major and minor members of the molding at right angles instead of mitering as otherwise Would be necessary. I i
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A moisture sealing linoleum molding comprising a pair of resilent cooperative members, one being formed' with a flange underlapping an edge of the linoleum and another fiange over the linolenm having a series of notches therein, and the other member adapted to forcibly impinge the upper surface of the linoleum and to be adjustably received in either of the notches of the other member. I
2. A linoleum molding comprising a substantially L-shaped major member the normally horizontal portion of which is slidably engageable beneath the edge of the lnoleum and having a groove horizontally of the upper edge of the vertical portion, and a cooperative resilent minor memberone edge of which is engageable within said groove and the opposite edge slidably engageable upon the npper surface o' the linoleum.
3. A floor covering seal comprising in combinaton a major receiving member a portion of which under-laps the covering, a removable spring like scaling member, having spaced longitudinally disposed edges for engagement with the upper surface of said covering.
4. A floor covering seal comprising in combination a major receving member, a rcnovable spring like sealing member, said sealng member having spaced terminal edge for frictional contact with the upper edge of the covering, and means whereby the covering is yieldably. held intermediate of two adjacent edges of the members.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
CHARLES S. OLSON.
