WILBER E. nownnsocx, or ROCHESTER, um Yon nssmiron ronoc'n-n'srnnronnme BOX COMPANY, or aoonnsrna, NEwYo-ax; eenroamroromtew Yam PACKING DEVICE'AND GASE Application filed November 15,1928. Serial Kain-$517.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved form of packing device made of paper products or more especially of corrugated board.
Another object is to make a packing device that will pack the article contained therein and hold it in suspension and in which the article packed and the packing case can be more easily brought together.
Another object of the invention is to provide a packing device that is separate from the box that will partially inclose the article to be packed and can be inserted in the box with the article and will hold the article out of contact with the box.
These and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawings, described in the specification and pointed out in the claims at the end thereof.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank which is scored to make a packing device comprising a bottom and two ends attached thereto with six flanges attached to the sides and bottom.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the blank shown in Figure l erected in position to en close the article.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through the box showing the article in dotted lines with the packing device interposed between it and the box.
In the drawings like reference numerals indicate like parts. V
In the drawings reference numeral 1 indicates a blank having a bottom 2 with the sides 3 and 4 connected thereto'by the scored lines 5 and 6. On the sides of the bottom are connected the flanges 7 and 8 by the scored lines 9 and 10. On the side 3 is connected the flanges 11 and 12 by the scored lines 13 and 14. On the side 4 are the flanges 15 and 16 connected by the scored- lines 17 and 18. On the bottom 2 is providedthe cushion pads 21 and 22 which pads are made up of a plurality of layers of double faced corrugated board or any equivalent material which is of light weight and has suflicient strength and resistance. On the side 3 are provided the cushion pads 23 and 24 and on the flanges 11 andl2'are-providedthe cushion pads 25 and 26L On; theside 4' is provided the: cushion pads 27 and 28 and onthefianges 15 andlfi are. provided the cushion pads 29' and 30. The cushion pads in each caselie-parallel to tively' hold the article that is enclosed thereby. The article 82' that is to be packed is placed on the cushion pads21 and; 22 andthe sides and flanges are then brought up around the article to be packed and the whole assembly is then placed in the box as shown in Figure 3; As will be seen the article a. is held out of contact with the cornersat-the sides and bottom of the packing case so that a considerableblow can be sustained by the packing case on any corner or along any edge of the side and bottom which blow willnot be communicated to the adjacent portion of the article that is to be packed thereby.
In the top of the box is placed a false top 33 whiclihas one square cushion pad 34 located centrally thereof," which pad rests directlv on top ofthe article to be packed while the false top 33 is held in position substantially even with the top oithe box. The flaps 35 and 36 are hinged to the-upper edges ofthe box and when the parts are all in the position shown in Figure 3Ythese flaps can be folded over and sealed invplace, making direct contact with the false top 33. When this is done, the package is ready to be shipped andithe article to be shipped is securely held in place in the packingcase and is protected against damage by any rough handling. of the package. 1
The blank andthe walls formed therefrom and the box in which it is enclosed are adapted in each case to the shape of the article to be paokedthereby, When completely assembled, this box has open air spaces at all corners and at all edges so that the box can be crushed in at any corner or along any edge for a considerable distance without'any damage being done to the contents of the box. The box can also receive a shock or blow without the shock or blow being communicated to the contents of the box.
I claim: 1 I
1. A packing device comprising a blank scored on suitable lines and adapted to make a bottom and two side wall members all in line with each other, each of said members having a flangeon each side thereof, connected thereto by suitable scored lines, two cushion pads on each of the three members, said pads being suitably spaced apart thereon, a
cushion pad on each of the four flanges of the side wall members, said cushion pads on the I flanges and side wall members being adapted f to stand at right angles to each other, spaced back from andon each side of the corner line between the sides and the flanges with an air space at the corner line between the pads.
2. A packing device comprising a blank scored on suitable lines and adapted to make a bottom and a s1de wall member, a flange on "one s1de of said side wall member, said parts being connected by suitable scored lines," a cushion pad on the side wall member and a cushion pad on the flange, said pads being adapted to standupright at right angles to 30 'side of the scored line with an airspace at each other spaced back from and on each the scored line between thepads, said pads bemg rectangular 1n lOIlgllllldlIliLl and trans- 'verse section.
8. A packing device comprising a blank scored on suitable lines and adapted to make a bottom and two side wall meinbers'all in line with each other, eachof said members having a flange on each s1de thereof, connected thereto by suitable scored lines, two cushion pads on each ofthe three members, said 7 pads being suitably spaced apart thereon, a
cushion pad on each of the four flanges of the side wall members, said cushion pads on the flanges and side wall members being adapted to stand at right angles to each other, spaced 1 back from and on each side of the corner line between the sides and the flanges with an air space at the corner line between the pads, said blank when folded being adapted to fit in a box with its upright score lines in the correspondinglcorners of the box and the cushion'pads extending-toward the middle of the box on either side of the score lines, said blank stopping short of the top of the box,
a false top having a pad on the bottom thereof adapted to rest on the article packed in the box centered in the box by the said cushion pads, said top closing the top of the box, cover flaps hinged to two opposite sides of the box anda'dapted to be sealed over the false top.
' In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
WILBEB E. BOWERSOCK.
