IMPROVEMENT IN FRlCTlON-CLUTCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,869, dated July 18, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SANFORD, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improvement in Friction-Wheels, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in the mode of arranging and operating certain friction-blocks for the regulation and control of windlasses, derricks, loose pulleys, &c.

This wheel 0 is made with the center D recessed from the outer edge,
and in the bottom of this recess are placed four segments, E, of a cirele-there may be more or less in numberand these segments have a dovetailed recess, 0, from the outer edge, and one end of the recess 0 is closed by a head, 0, which has through it a hole.
The friction -blocks made of wood, are concave on their inner end and convex on the outer, and are made dovetail, and are slipped into the recess 0 from the open end until it is full. Then a bolt, 01, bent in semicircle, is put through the head 6, and through all the blocks, and a nut, t, holds it and the blocks in position in the segment.
The dovetailing of the segments and of the blocks is of special importance in keeping the blocks from flying out too far on the motion of the wheel 0. The blocks, when the wheel is not operating, do not project out beyond the outer edge of the wheel 0, and in that position the wheel and the blocks turn inside of the flange B.
The segments ha e a projection, G, from their inner edge, which extends through an opening in the inner edge of the wheel 0, and fitting snugly in said opening, to prevent the lateral motion of said segments; and to this projection is jointed an adjustable arm, H, made adjustable in length by being in two parts, as seen in the one marked F, .and coupled together bya right-and-left-hand nut,
The opposite end of the arm H is jointed to the knuckle I, made to slide on the shaft to, reacted by the spring S. This knuckle is kept from turning by a cross-key, 7a, which passes through a slot, m, in the shaft a, and is notched to fit into the knuckle, and, by the shaft and the connection with the key, knuckle, and arms, motion is communicated to the wheel 0, and, as a consequence, to the segments and blocks.
The shaft a has a hole, 1", in the end outside of the key, and a plunger, 19, is put therein, resting in a hearing, 0, attached to the frame f. To the frame, also, on one side of the shaft, is fixed a post, Q, and to this is jointed a lever, L.
When it is desirable to connect the wheel '0 and Windlass A for working a machine, the
lever is pressed against the end of the plunger, pushing it into the shaft against the key, which carries the knuckle inward on the shaft, and, by the arms, presses out the segments, forcing the blocks against the inner surface of the flange B, and locks the two together for operation. The release of thelever and the action of the spring break the connection.
The arms H are made adjustable to provide that, when the outer surfaces of the blocks become worn off, they may be pressed out by lengthening the arms, and continue their friction service. Therefore, 4
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the Windlass or pulley A, having the flange B, the recessed wheel 0, carrying the dovetailed segments E and dovetailed friction blocks 1), operated by the arms H and knuckle I, sliding on the shaft a, and the plunger 12 and lever L, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The dovetailed segments E, with the head 6, and the dovetailed blocks I), held in position by the bolt 61, substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
3. The recessed wheel 0 and the dovetailed segments E, holding the blocks 1) lying therein, and the said segments being kept in position laterally by the projection Gr, extending through the inner edge of the wheel 0, in combination with the arms H and flange B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
