This invention relates to a device for winding rolls of paper or the like. It relates more specifically to a device in which a pluraht of sheets are wound simultaneously by di ferent operators. p

It has been found convenient in certain cases to produce a sheet of greater width than is necessary to be used, in which case the sheet is slit into two or more portions and the individual portions wound on separate rolls. B this invention the separate portions ofthe sht sheet can be conveniently. and rapidly wound on difit'erent mandrels or spindles. In the drawings reference character 1 designates a pulley that is mounted upona shaft 2 and is driven by belt 3 from any convenient source not shown. The shaft 2 is mounted in bearings 4 and 5 and carries two pulleys 6 and 7 for driving spindles, as will be more fullydescribed below. The shaft 2 also carries loosely mounted thereon a pinion 8 which can be caused to revolve with the shaft 2 by means of the magnetic clutch 9 which ma ube of the ordinary or usual construction.

A foot lever (see Fig; 4) mounted to turn about the fixed bearing 41 has an arm 42 pivotally connected by a strap 43 to the bar 44, which in turn has levers 45 and '46 connected thereto to turn in fixed bearings 47 and 48. The upper end of the lever 46 is connected to the'arm 49, which is mounted on a fixed pivot 50 (Fig. 2) so that the other end of this arm can be projected in the ath of the projection 34. The upper end oi the lever 45 is connected to the arm 52 which is pivoted at 53 and serves to operate the clutch 28. A similar foot lever 40 is provided for the spindle 27 and the connected parts are the same as already described in connection with the foot lever 40, which it is thought unnecessary to describe again.

provided for the sheets to pass over the same. i As shown in Fig. 3, the magnetic clutch 9 is connected to any convenient source 62 of electricity. Si 'al lights 66 and 67 are mounted in View of t e-operator of the spindle 26, and lights 68 and 69 are mounted m view-of the operator of the spindle 27. These lights are connected-so as to shine under ordinary conditions. The operator of spindle 26 hasac- .cess -to. a. ush switch or button represented by 70 in i .v 3 and his-foot lever 40 operates the switch 72. In a similar way the operator of spindle 27 can operate switches 71 and circuits through the lights 66 and 68 when switch or 71 is closed, and to open the circuit through the lights 67 and 69 when switch 72 or 73 is closed. When either operator turns the switch or pushes either button 70 or 71, he thereby breaks the circuit through the llghts, but the circuit through the magnetic 9 is not complete until both operators have turned the switches 70 and 71 to the dotted line position. In a similar way the switches 72 and 73 may be operated, but the switches 72 and 73 are connected so as to be operated by the pedals 40 and 40'. In this way as soon as either operator presses his foot on his foot lever, the lights are extinguished but the circuit is not completed through the switches 72 and 73 to operate-the clutch 9 until both switches 72 and 73 are turned to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 3.
The operation is as follows:
A sheet of paper or the like is passed under the slitting roll 16 and is slit as indicated, the ends passing between the pull rolls 12 and 14, which pull rolls are operated only when the switches 70 and 71 or the switches 72 and 73 are simultaneously closed. The pull rolls are driven, the respective halves of the sheet being carried over the rolls 58 and 59 and the tables 60 and 61 until the ends enter the slots 30 and 31 of .the spindles 26 and 27. The magnetic clutch 9 can be released and the rolls 14 thereby caused to stop either by one operator opening his switch 70 or by the other operator opening his corresponding switch 71. The operators may cause the pull rolls 12 and 14 to advance the sheet by both closing their respective switches 70 and 71. As soon as the end of either half enters the slot 30 or 31 of the spindles 26 or 27, the corresponding operator can stopthe pull'rolls by releasing his switch and may then start his spindle to turning by pressing his foot upon the foot lever 40 or 40', thus operating the corresponding clutch 28 or 29 to drive the spindle 26 or 27. The clutches 28 and 29 are friction clutches and are such that they will slip unless the sheet is being advancedby the pull rolls 12 and 14. 'It will be seen from the description that both operators have control of the pull rolls and that neither one can start the pull rolls 12 and 14 until the other one is ready to begin winding his portion of the sheet. Also, each receives a signal, when the other one is ready, by the lights being extinguished. When the proper number of convolutions have been wound on the spindles 26 and 2 7 the winding can be stopped by either operator removing his foot from his foot lever, whereupon both operators cut off the sheets with the knives 55 and remove the rolls, and prepare the spindles .for the reception of the other ends of the sheets. When the foot levers are in their normal pos'ition, the lugs 34 and 35 of the disks 32 and 33 will contact with the end of the arms 50, thus stopping the spindles so that the slots 30 and 31 are in the proper. ositions to receive the ends of the sheets. f one operator is more prompt than the other one in getting ready to start, he will not be able to start up the pull rolls 12 and 14 until the other one 18 also ready to wind up his half of the sheet.
I claim i 1. In a device of the class described, means for advancing portions of a slit sheet and winding the portions separately, and a controller for each of said winding means, said controllers being in series for controlling said advancing means. j
2. In a device of the class described, pull rolls, a clutch for controlling said pull rolls a winding device for each portion of a slit sheet, a clutch for each winding device, means associated with each of said last named clutches and dependent upon the actuation thereof for controlling said pull roll clutch. 3. In a device of the class described, pull rolls, a magnetic clutch for controlling said pull rolls, an electric circuit for said clutch,

5. A winding device comprising 1pull rolls, a winding shaft, a winding ro rigidly mounted upon said shaft, driving means for said shaft and means for operably connecting said driving means to said shaft and for locking said winding roll and stopping the pull rolls upon the release of said connecting means. 6. In a slitting machine, pull rolls, a plurality of winding rolls and means whereby the stopping of said pull rolls is dependent upon the stopping of only one of said winding rolls.
7. In a winding device pull rolls, a plurality of winding rolls, means for drivin said rolls and control elements associate with said winding rolls, said elements being independently movable to cause the pull rolls to be disconnected from the driving means therefor.
I 8; :In a device of the class described, pull rolls; a plurality of winding rolls, means for driving all of saidrolls, and independently operable control elements movable to render the driving means for a winding roll and the pull rolls inoperative, the starting of the 5 pull rolls being dependent upon the actuation of the driving means for all the winding rolls.
9. In a winding device, pull rolls, a plurality of winding rolls, means for driving said rolls including a drive means for each of 10 the winding rolls, and elements controlling the operation of the driving means for the pull rolls, the said elements being operated by the joint actuation of the driving means for all of the winding rolls.
