Description

March 31, 1931. c. "r. CARLSON STEAM BOILER Filed June 15, 1925 eaeoao oooenooo Patented Mar. 31, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CARL T. CARLSON, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO ERIE CITY IRON WORKS, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA STEAM BOILER Application filed June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,141.
This invention relates to steam boilers having a front and rear drum in the plane of the water level and a lower drum, these drums having a water connection with a front bank of tubes with an up-flow from the lower drum to the front drum, an upper bank of water tubes between the front drum and the rear drum with a flow from the front drum to the rear drum, and a rear bank of tubes from the rear drum to the lower drum having a downflow. The invention is designed to improve the gas passes through a boiler of this type to make the circulation in the manner described more pronounced, and in this connection preferably so arranged as to force a crossing and return crossing of the upper bank of tubes by the gases. It also involves a superheater comprising tubes having parts arranged in two passes so that said tubes are crossed and recrossed. It also involves an arrangement of the rear bank of tubes to accelerate the circulation. Other features and details of the invention will appear more fully from the specification and claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a central vertical section of the boiler on the line 11 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 a section on the line 22 in Fig. 1.
1 marks the upper drum, 2 the lower-drum, and 3 the rear drum. The front bank of tubes 1 and la lead from the lower drum to the upper drum. An upper bank of water tubes 5 lead from the front drum to the rear.
drum. A rear bank of tubes 6 lead from the rear drum to the lower drum. Steam tubes 7 lead from the front drum to the rear drum and steam discharge tubes 8 lead from the rear drum to a chamber 9 arranged in the upper part of the front drum. A steam pipe 10 leads from the chamber 9 to a manifold 11 of the superheater, the super-heater having coils 12 extending from the manifold 11 to a manifold 13.
The furnace is surrounded by a wall 14: in which the boiler is arranged and a top wall 15. A combustion chamber 16 is directly in front of the front bank of tubes and the tubes 4 of the front bank are directly in the combustion space. A baffle 17 extends from the lower drum along the rear of the tubes between the tubes a and 4a to a point below the upper drum and a baflle 18 extends from the upper end of the baffle 17 across the tubes eta, across the tubes 12 to a bafile 19 which extends upwardly across the tubes 5. Thus the gases from the furnace extend along the tubes 1 across the entire front bank of the tubes, across the upper end of the superheater tubes, and across the tubes 5 turning in the tubes 7 and 8 and recrossingthe tubes 5.
A baffle 20 is arranged at the rear of the front bank of tubes and affects a return flow of the gases into the tubes 4a of the front bank of tubes. A baffle 21 extends from the lower end of the baflle 20 to a point above the lower drum 2. The gases passing from the lower end of the pass between the baffles 17 and 21 swing out into the tubes 6 and baffle 22 extends up the front side of the bank of tubes 6 to the rear drum 3 and makes a closure with the batlie 20. it will be noted, therefore, that there are five crossings of the tubes in this passage of gas, thus assuring uniform heat distribution and an efficient heat transference and it will also be noted that the superheater tubes are crossed twice by the gases in their pass. The feed water is delivered through a pipe 23 to the rear drum and a water drainage pipe 24 leads from the chamber 9, the end extending into one of the tubes 5 so as to have any water that may condense in the chamber 9 drawn from that chamber by the ejector effect on the end of the tube. It will be noted that the tubes 6 are all at the rear of the drum 3. This brings them in harmony with the discharge of the tubes 5 so that any movement of the liquid incident to such discharge tends to carry the water into the tubes 6. Further the hottest of the tubes 6 lead from the lowest part of the rear drum so to further the uniform flow of water through all the rear tubes.
