  • This invention relates to improvements in syringes and particularly syringes embodying a glass barrel within a metal holder or frame. It is desirable in such a holder to provide means for supporting the barrel and also for aligning its end or nipple with the syringe needle holder while avoiding any lateral strains on the nipple and relieving the glass barrel entirely from the thrust of the needle, thus preventing the liability of any lateral or longitudinal strain fracturing the glass barrel.

This invention relates to improvements in syringes and particularly syringes embodying a glass barrel within a metal holder or frame. It is desirable in such a holder to provide means for supporting the barrel and also for aligning its end or nipple with the syringe needle holder while avoiding any lateral strains on the nipple and relieving the glass barrel entirely from the thrust of the needle, thus preventing the liability of any lateral or longitudinal strain fracturing the glass barrel. My improvements Vare particularly adapted for use in such a syringe as that disclosed in the lVarriner patent, No. 1,529,412, March 10, 1925. In the drawings I have disclosed and in the specification described a form of my invention which has proven successful in practical use.

In my present invention I employ the usual syringe holder 1 which is provided with opposite openings 2 through which the syringe barrel may be observed. At one end the holder is provided with the usual laterally projecting nger clasps 3 3 and at its lower or needle end has a square orifice 4 through which passes the connection for the barreland the needle. This connection comprise-s a bushing 5 which has a square portion 51 passing through the orifice 4v in the bottom of the holder and extending beyond said square portion 51 as a threaded portion 52 adapted to be engaged by a knurled nut 6, and beneath said portion 52 terminating as a second threaded portion 58 adapted to engage with the usual syringe needle not shown. Resting on the flange 11 of the holder 1 and encircling the square portion 51 of the bushing is a rocker washer 7 provided with oppositely disposed ridges 71 on each of its faces which permit full lateral play of the bushing 5 and tend to aid alignment of the nipple 101 in the bushing as hereinafter eX- plained.
EXternally of the barrel but encircling that part oit' the square portion 51 of the bushing 5 which extends beyond the orifice 4 is a second rocker washer 8 similar to the rocker washer 7 and provided with oppositely disposed ridges 81 on each of its faces similar to the ridges 71 on the rocker washer 7. This washer is held in place on the bushing by the knurled nut 6 above referred to. Additional ridges may be provided on these rocker washers 7 and 8 and the same may be variously arranged with regard to the barrel and bushing. In operation, after the barrel 10 has been placed within the holder l the knurled nut 6 is unscrewed in order that full play may be given to the roclrer washers 7 and 8 in order that the nipple 101 may readily be centered in the bushing 5 without any unnecessary lateral strain on the nipple. Once the nipple 101 is seated in the bushing 5 the lrnurled nut 6 may again be tightened to hold the bushing 5 and rocker washers 7 8 in rigid position with relation to the holder l. In use, the thrust of the needle is transmitted directly through the rocker washers and bushing to the holder 1 thus entirely relieving the glass pump of any lateral or longitudinal strain and avoiding the liability of fracturing the glass barrel.
Modifications will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art but within the scope of the present invention is claimed.
What I therefore claim and desire to se-y cure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a syringe holder having a square orifice in its lower end, a barrel in said holder, a bushing loosely mounted of said bushing whereby to aid alignment of the same with said barrel comprising av pair of spaced rocker washers, one of'sa-id'w'ashers being disposed within said holder and encircling said bushing and the other of said washers encircling said bushing externally of'said holder, and means for adjustinoF said rocker washers with relation to said Ibushing.
2. The combination of a syringe holder having an orifice in its lower end, a barrel in said holder, ya bushingVin-said holder` bored to receive the nipple of said barrel, said bushing extending through said orificev and -constructed to secure a needle, means permitting the lateral play ofsa-id bushing whereby to aid alignment of the same-with said barrel comprising `rocker washers encircling said bushing, and 'means for adjusting said rocker washers with relation to said bushing.
3. The combination of a syringe holder having an orificein itsvlower end, a barrel in said holder, abushing-in said holder bored to receive the nipple-ofsaid barrel, said bushing extending through said orice and con structed to secure -a needle, means-permitting the Ilateral play of saidbushing whereby to aid'alignment offthe same with -said barrel comprising a rockerl washer and means for adjusting said rocker washerV with relation to said bushing.
4l. In a syringe holder having an orifice in its lower end, a bushing adapted to seat in said orifice with lateral play, and to hold a needleand thenipple ofthe barrel, and means toaid alignment of saidnipple with said bushing consisting of a rocker washer and means for adjusting said rocker washer to prevent or permit play thereof with 4relation to said bushing.` y j 8.
