' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES S. ADAMS, OF OLATHE, KANSAS.`
IMPROVEMENT lN FLAT-IRON HETERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,754, dated July 11, 1876; application filed March 4, 1876. Y
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. ADAMS, of Olathe, in the county of Johnson and State of Kansas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in' Flat-Iron Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a transverse-vertical section of my tlatiron heater, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view, andFig. 4 an end view thereof.
` The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a sad-iron heater, composed essentially of a furnace with sliding removable top, and a sliding heatingchamber mounted thereon, and provided with doors arranged for different sized-irons, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A represents an elongated furnace, the two side walls of which are double, but may be made single, if desired. When made double, as shown in the drawing, spaces D will be left between the walls, which will communicate with the external air by means of holes E E, thereby allowing a free circulation ot' air .in the two sides of the furnace-chamber. F is the pipe at one end of the furnace, through which the products of combustion escape. Atthe other end of the furnace is a door, B, provided with a register, G, which allows a free circulation of air above and below the grate H, through which the ashes fall into the ash-pan I below, said pan being removable at pleasure for emptying the contents. rIhe furnace is provided with a sliding top, M, which may be removed and replaced by a new one, if necessary. On top ofthe furnace is mounted a bottoinless case, C, for holding the irons: This case is arranged to slide on the furnace, and provided with a central verticalcross-partition, L, which dilids and insert the iron, without taking hold y of the lids with his hands and burning them, by placing the point of the iron under said slide or ear.
When the irons are inserted, the handles Y are left entirely outside, thereby preventing them from heating.
The central partition L prevents the escape ofheat from one chamber while the other chamber is open for the insertion or removal of an iron.
The case C may be easily moved oft' from the furnace When desired, and the furnace used for other purposes..
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The bottomless case G, arranged to slide on top ofthe furnace, and provided with the partition L, in combination with the hinged doors J, having openings x, slotted slides K, having openings in their sides, and ears K', substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The furnace A, provided with a sliding top plate, in combination with a bottomless case, C, arranged to slide on top of said furnace, and provided with the partition L, hinged door J, slotted slides K, and ears K', `substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence oftwo witnesses.
' JAMES S. ADAMS.
