Description

March 17, 1931. R CRAWFORD 1,796,862
ADVERTI S I NG 5 IGN Filed April 27, 1929 Qwoentoz lrau/yord Patented Mar. 17, 1931 PATENT @FFEQEE ROY F. CRAWFORD, OF LABETTE, KANSAS ADVERTISING SIGN Application filed April 27,
This invention relates to advertising signs and particularly to those signs which have a wind propelled rotatable member for the purpose of attracting attention.
5 The general object of this invention is to provide a sign which is particularly attractive and which is particularly designed for the purpose of advertising automobile tires such as balloon tires and the like.
9 A further object is to provide a sign consisting of a placard or sign-board upon which the text of the sign may be painted and above this sign-board a wind-propelled rota-table member carrying thereon a representation of 5 a tire, such as a balloon tire either painted or cast, molded or otherwise formed thereon.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the rear face of a sign constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Referring to these drawings, it will be 5 seen that the sign board is designated 10.
This consists of a sheet of metal suitably braced, or it may be made of wood suitably braced, to provide a sign board. This is sup orted as illustrated by means of the angular brackets 11. These brackets extend upon the inside face of the sign board and are bolted to the sign board and the sign board is braced preferably by transversely extending braces 12, the middle portions of which are oifset as at 13 from the rear face of the sign board.
These middle portions 13 support a tubular bearing 14.
Mounted in the tubular bearing is the rotatable wind propelled member 15 which consists preferably of a metallic annulus which is supported by means of a spindle 16 having radial arms 17 extending outward of the annulus and attached thereto in any suitable manner. The light annulus carries'upon its periphery a plurality of wind cups 18' all facing, of course, in one direction whereby it may be propelled, these cups being mounted upon the arms 17 which extend through the annulus. The upper portion of the annulus is preferably upwardly and centrally inclined 1929. Serial No. 358,675.
and upon this portion 19 there may be painted the representation of a tire, such as a balloon tire or a real or imitation tire may be mounted thereon. As the wind blows, the annulus will revolve so as to give to the tire carried thereby a natural motion.
I do not wish to be limited to the annulus being centrally inclined at 19 as the annulus might extend upward or be forwardly inclined,'though preferably it is inwardly inclined to permit the similitude of a tire to be disposed on the inclined face and be attached thereto.
A sign constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly efiective for the reason that the annulus does not contain any advertising-matter. This advertising matter is placed upon the placard or sign board where it may be read at all times. Where a rotatable wind propelled annulus carries advertising matter thereon, either the annulus remains stationary and only one advertisement can be seen at a time, or else the annulus is rotating at a greater or less speed and it is difficult to read the advertisements as the higher the speed, the greater the advertisements will be blurred or run into each other. By having the advertising matter placed upon the placard or sign board, it can be easily read at any time while at the same time the rotating annulus will attract attention at all times. This annulus at night may carry lamps of different colors so as to throw difl'erent lights upon the sign or otherwise attract attention.
It will be seen that if a. plurality of lights are carried by the rotating annulus, that the sign board will be alternately lighted and unlighted. These lights might be carriedupon the exterior of the annulus or upon the interior thereof which is hollow. I have illustrated the annulus as being provided with two electric lights designated 20 and disposed within the annulus and the upwardly inclined portion 19 in this case acts asa reflector throwing light downward on to the face of the sign.
Iclaim:
1. An advertising sign of the character described comprising a rigid sign board disposed in a vertical plane, a tubular bearing carried upon the rear of the sign board, and an annular wind propelled member having a vertical spindle supported in said bearing, the wind propelled member being annular and having an upwardly and centrally extending annular portion carrying an annular symbol thereon associated with the matter on the sign board, said annular member carrying lights within it and concealed from view by the annular member. 7 v 2. An advertising sign of the character described, comprising a sign board disposedin a vertical plane, a vertical spindle rotatably 15 mounted upon the sign board and projecting above the same, an annular wind propelled member mounted to rotate with said vertical spindle and disposed above the sign board and having Wind cups mounted upon the periphery, the wind propelled member having an upwardly and centrally extending annular portion carrying an annular symbol thereon associated with the matter on the sign board.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ROY F. CRAWFORD.
