Serial No. 186,064.
My present invention relates to an auxilibeing shown in elevation in assembled relaary water heater, or heat transfer device. tion with the head and boiler plate. The invention particularly refers to the pro- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head and vision of heads for such a device which asboiler plate shown in Fig. 1.

The tube receiving portion it) of the head I attain the foregoing objects and results is bored, as at 23, either in the arrangement by means of the structures illustrated in the shown in Figs. 1 and 3 or 4- and (.1. as the accompanying drawing, in whichcase may be, for the receipt ot the tubes 17. 5 Fig. 1 is a central vertical section of a 17, and 18, 18, in which bores the tubes may head in which all of the tubes of the respecbe either expanded or brazed in accordan e tive pairs of tubes are disposed in the same with the respective practices as may be plane, the head being shown in attachment desired. 50 with a fragment of boiler plate, the tubes In both forms of head the chambered por- 109 tion 11 is provided with an inlet, a discharge, and a blind chamber.
In the form of head shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the inlet chamber, 21, is preferably located in the lower end of the member 11 and is provided both on the forward end and side with tapped ports, B ta and 21?), for greater convenience in making attachment therewith, and one of the ports is closed with a plug, 240, as shown in Fig. 1, and into the other is screwed an inlet pipe 21d, as shown in Fig. 3. The inner end of the inlet chamber 2t registers and communicates with the lowermost tube opening 23 in the tube receiving portion 10.
The discharge chamber, 25, is located in the upper end of the portion 11 and is similar in size and shape to the inlet chamber 21 and is likewise provided with tapped end and side ports, 25a and 25b, for the interchangeablereceipt of a plug 250 and dis charge pipe 25(1. The inner end of the discharge chamber 25 registers and communicates with the top tube opening 23 in the tube receiving portion 10 of the head.
The blind chamber, or chamber Without exterior opening. in the form of head shown in'Figs. 1 to 3, is designated by the reference character 96 and is located directly between the inlet and discharge chambers 21 and 25 respectively. The inner end of the chamber 26 is suliiciently elongated to register and communicate with the two openings 23 in the tube receiving portion 10 which are nearest the center thereof, but the outer or forward end of the chamber 26, having no opening therein, may be reduced, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, which gives plenty of room for the location of the ports 24a and 2-H) and 25a and 257) in the inlet and discharge chambers respectively.
In the form of head shown in Figs. 4 to G inclusive, in which the tubes are disposed in two planes instead of a single plane, a right angled division wall .27, as clearly shown in Figs. -21 and 6, provides the blind chamber 26 at one side of the base of the chambered portion 11 of the head, while a division wall 28 extending at right angles from the central portion of the division wall 27 divides the remaining portion of the chambered portion 11 of the head into an inlet chamber 24 and a discharge chamber 25. In this form of head the lateral ports 24]; and 257) are provided in tubular extensions 29 and 30 from the inlet and discharge chambers respectively. These extensions are rendered desirable by the somewhat cylindric form of this variety of head, and in this variety of head the lateral extension 20 on the side opposite the tubular extensions 29 and 30 is located adjacent the inner instead of the outer end of-the chambered portion 11 of the head, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.
Having described by invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An auxiliary water heater comprising groups of tubes the remote ends of which groups are unconnected, the tubes of each group having communication at their remote ends, and a head with which the proximate ends of said tubes communicate, said head being partitioned to provide an inlet and a discharge chamber each having ports and with which chambers a tube of each group of tubes respectively comnnmicates and an unported chamber having communication with the other tubes of said respective groups of tubes and means for securing said head with the tubes to an apertured boiler plate.
2. An auxiliary water heater comprising a plurality of groups of tubes the remote ends of which groups are unconnected, the tubes of each group having communication at their remote ends, and a head with which the proximate ends of said tubes communicate, said head being partitioned to provide an inlet and a discharge chamber each having ports and with which chambers a tube of each group of tubes respectively communicates and an unportcd chamber having communication with tubes of said respective groups of tubes, and means for seeming said head with the tubes attached, to an apertured boiler plate.
3. An auxiliary water heater comprising a plurality of groups of tubes the remote ends of which groups are unconm-ctcd, the tubes of each group having communication at their remote ends, and a h ad with which the proximate ends of said tubes are assembled, said head being partitioned to pro vide an inlet and a discharge chamber each having ports and with which chambers a tube of each of said groups of tubes rcspectively communicates and means for effecting communication between the other tubes of said respective groups of tubes, and means for-securing said head to an apertured metal casing.
4. An auxiliary water heater comprising ahead and means for securing said head to an apertured metal casing. said head comprising a casing having symmetrically arranged tube openings in one side thereof, and inlet and discharge ports in another side thereof, and partitions forming compartments each having a tube opening and an inlet or discharge port therein, and a compartment having only tube openings therein.
