This invention relates to; portable or hand operated tools particularly percussive tools of the expansible chamber of fluid pressure type,- such as pneumatic hammers. More specifically it concerns means for maintaining the parts'of such tools. in assembled relation and in fiuid'tight engagement-,- and is an improvement upon the construction disclosed in U. S. Patent No. 1,535,739 issued April 28th, 1925, to J. R. L. Santos.
Among the objects of the invention are to eliminate at least one of the parts heretofore considered necessary in automatic takeup devices of the described type and in general to simplify and to improve previously known constructions.
Essentially the invention consists in ways and means for utilizing an automatic takeup spring to maintain the locking sleeve in engagement with the closure member for the cylinder of a fluid pressure motor. In applying the invention to' a pneumatic hammer it is possible to dispense with the spring clip heretofore used for performing the above functon.
In order to illustrate the invention one concrete embodiment thereof is'shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview ofa pneumatic hammer having the" handle secured thereto but showing the locking and automatic take-up means therefor in disassembled re lation;
Fig. 2 is a. top plan view of the hammer showing the parts in their operative or assembled relation;
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2 but omitting the air ports and passages in the hammer cylinder which are not concerned in the present invention; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View substantially on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration, the pneumatic hammer comprises a barrel 5 having one end closed by a suitable member, such as handle 6. The handle has a cylindrical portion 6a telescoping over the end of bar- 'rel 5 and secured thereto by cooperating screw threads 7 (Fig. 4). Cylindricalp'ortion 6a of hammer member 6 terminates in an annular series'of ratchet teetlrS arrangec for interlocking engagement with similar teeth 9 on an annular locking ring 10 arranged to he slipped over hammer barrel 5 as indicated in Fig. 1. Locking ring 10 has an undercut portion 10a (Fig. 4) which houses a split spring ring 11' when the lockcylinder 666. Spring ring 11 has an inturned end 11a adapted to be received in a recess 12 in hammer barrel. 5 and an out turned end 11?) adapted to be connected to locking sleevevlO by being received in a slot 13 in the latter. The structure heretofore described conforms to the prior art as illustrated by the Santos patent above referred to, and is adapted to function similarly, namely automatically to tighten handle 6 upon barrel 5, by securing. the ends of the spring ring 11 to barrel 5 and lockingv ring 10 respectively and then rotating the looking ring clockwise (Fig. l) to tension spring 11 before forcing the locking ring against handle 6 to interlock ratchet teeth Sand 9'.
The present invention aims to utilize the spring ring 11* to perform the additional function of maintaining the locking ring 10 in interlocking engagement with handle member 6 thereby dispensing with the spring clip which has been previously used to accomplish the last-named result. To this end the spring ring 11 is distorted later.- ally or axially of the hammer barrel. For this purposea suitable abutmentv 14 (Figs. 1 and 2) is provided onthe locking ring 10 adjacent slot 13. By preference the abutment is formed by notching. locking ring 10 at 15, the notch serving to increase the extent of slot 13 at a point remote from the edge carrying the 'loclring teeth 9. With this arrangement it will be apparent from Fig. 2 that when the outturned' end 116 of springrin'g 11 is forced into the notch 15 of slot 1"3 'so as to engage abutment 14, end 11?) is laterally offset from end 11a of the spring with the result that spring ring 11 exerts a force-againstabutment 14- tending-tomain tain locking ring- 10 iii interlocked engage mg ring 10 is in engagement" with handle ment with handle members 6. In other words the notch 15 of locking ring 10 and recess 12 of barrel 5 are so positioned relative to each other that the outer end of the spring ring, which engages notch 15, is ofiset relative to the end which engages recess 12 and the spring ring is distorted so as to apply a constant force to the locking ring in a lateral direction, i. e. toward handle 6.
lVhile a preferred form of the invent-ion has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details thereof, but cov rs all changes, modifications and adaptations within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a fluid pressure tool the combination with a barrel, of a member having threaded engagement with said barrel, a ring on said barrel having means to engage said mem her, and a single resilient member acting on and through said ring to exert a constant force tending both to screw said member upon said barrel and to maintain said ring in engagement with said member.
2. In a fluid pressure tool the combination with a barrel, of a member having threaded engagement with said barrel, a ring freely movable 011 said barrel, said member and said ring having cooperating engaging means, and resilient means engaging both said barrel and said ring but having no contact with said member, said means being arranged to exert a constant rotating tendency on the ring and through the same on said member in a direct-ion to screw said member upon said barrel and to exert a constant pressure to maintain said ring in contact with said member.
3. In a fluid pressure tool the combination with a barrel, of a member having threaded engagement with said barrel, a ring freely movable on said barrel, said member and said ring having cooperating engaging means, and a spring ring engaging both said barrel and said ring arranged to exert a constant rotating tendency on the ring and through the same on said member in a direction to screw said member upon said barrel and to exert a constant pressure to maintain said ring in contact with said member with said means interengaged.
4:. In a fluid pressure tool, the combination with a barrel, of a handle having threaded engagement with the barrel, said handle having ratchet teeth, a locking ring movable on said barrel having teeth to engage the teeth on said handle, and spring means arranged to exert upon said ring both a lateral force to maintain it in teeth engaging relation with said handle and a rotative force which is transmitted by said ring to said handle to screw the latter upon said barrel.
5. In a pneumatic tool, the combination with a barrel, of a handle having threaded engagement with said barrel, a locking ring on said barrel having means for interlocking engagement with said handle, a split ring having its ends respectively connected to said barrel and to said locking ring and arranged to apply a constant rotative force to said ring automatically to take up looseness in said handle relative to said barrel, the ends of said ring being normally in the same plane, and means for laterally displacing the ends of said spring ring to cause the latter to maintain said locking ring in interlocked engagement with said handle.
6. In a pneumatic tool the combination with a barrel, of a handle having threaded engagement with said barrel, a locking ring on said barrel having means for interlocking engagement with said handle, an annular split ring having one end inturned and the other end outt-urned, said ends being normally in the same plane, said barrel having" a recess to receive the inturned end of said spring ring and said locking ring having a slot to receive the outturned end of said spring ring, and means on said locking ring for maintaining its end of said spring ring ofiset relative to the end engaging said barrel.
7. In a pneumatic tool the combination with a barrel, of a handle having threaded engagement with said barrel, a locking ring on said barrel having means for interlocking engagement with said handle, an annular split ring having one end inturned and the other end outturned, said ends being normally in the same plane, said barrel having a recess to receive the inturned end oi said spring ring and said locking ring having a slot to receive the outturned end of said spring ring, and an abutment or stop on said locking ring formed by a notch adjacent said slot for maintaining one end of said spring ring offset relative to the other end of the latter thereby to exert a lateral pressure on said locking ring to maintain it in interlocked relation with said handle.
