IMPROVEMENT IN REED-ORGAN ATTACHMENTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,643, dated July 11, 1876; application filed November 24, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS N. BROWN, of Jamestown, in the county ofbhautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in Cabinet-Organs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a 'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which music,) in such a manner that it becomes a part of the organ; and consists in so making the case of an organ that the metronome may be inserted in the top in such a position that it will be convenient for the operator to see the face or pendulum of the metronome while playing, and also in attaching a stop to the metronome, so that it may be set in motion or stopped at the will of the operator.

In music the most difficult thing to teach is correct timein fact, teacher or pupil does not, generally, know when they do keep correct time; and to obviate this themetronome was invented many years ago in France, and has been introduced and used in this country by a limited number ofteachers and leaders of music; but the objection to its general use, as heretofore constructed and used, is that, being a small article of frail mechanism, its falling to the floor, or any heavyjar, so disarranges its mechanism that it becomes useless. overcome these objections, and to further utilizc it, I combine it with the case of a musical instrument, as will be seen in the accompanying drawing, where A represents the case of an organ, which may be made in any desirable style, having a place above the keys, and in front of the operator, which is made so as to insert the metronome B, as shown.

The case may be so made that when shut it will entirely inclose the metronome.

The metronome is connected with the stop 0 by suitable mechanism for operating the metronome, so that when the stop is drawn the pendulum will be set in motion, and when closed it will stop.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, in a reed-organ, or similar musical instrument, of a metronome, B, and operating-stop G, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
