Ymeshing into internal gear F, and external STATES PATENT OFFICE BENAIAH FITTS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ARRANGEMENT OF FEED-ROLLERS FOR PLANINGr-MACI-IINES.
'Specification of Letters Patent No. 17,963, dated August 11, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl I, BENALH Frrirs, of the city and county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving Gears on Feed-Rolls for Vood-Planing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which compose a part of this specification, and which is a perspective view.
TheA machine consists of a frame A, on which the other parts rest.
B and C are feed rolls for feeding the lumber int-o the machine, having shafts or bearings projecting far enough at one end to receive the gears,-D, the cutting cylinder,-E, E, a frame in which hangs the cylinder D, and top feed roll B, and may be raised or lowered for dierent thicknesses of lumber,-F, an internal and external gear made fast on roll shaft C,-G, an external gear made fast on roll shaft B. The size of the rolls t0 correspond with that of the gears so that the surfaces of B, and C, shall H, a pinion gear G.
I, and J, are connecting arms holding firmly at one end the shaft on which the pinion H, revolves, the other ends being attached-L to the roll shaft B, and J, to the roll shaft C, thus allowing the roll B, to move up or down, the pinion being held firmly in gear, communicating the desired motion from F, to G.
L, is the shaft to'which the power is apf plied to drive the rolls-M, screws on which are gears for raising the frame E,-N, the crank shaft. on which are gears for raising the frame E,-O, pulley for driving cutting cylinder-P, a gage to guide the board through the machine-R, a roll, joint and spring to hold the board against the gage P.
I am aware that internal and external gear have been used for similar purposes, the gears being attached at the opposite ends of the roll shafts, motion being communicated from one to the other by pinions on the end of a shaft which vibrates at one end as the roll is raised or lowered.
The characteristic features of my invention are, the arranging the size of the rolls to correspond with that of the gears so that their surfaces shall move with equal velocity; and also the holding of the stud or shaft on which the pinion H, revolves by the connecting arms I, and J, as described, so that the pinion is held firmly in gear when the roll B, is raised or lowered in combination with the internal and external gears.
IVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent in driving gears or feed rolls for wood planing machines, isl- The internal gear F, and the external gear Gr, in combination with the pinion H, and connecting arms I, and J, when constructed and operated as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, in the presence of two witnesses.
BENAIAH FITTS. [Ls] Witnesses:
E. C. TAINTER, E. A. WOOD.
