' The invention relates to top air supplying apparatus for furnaces more particularly for furnaces for locomotives, stationary steam generating plants and the like.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide the fire door opening with horizontal ribs for the dual purpose of heating the top air entering through the fire door and cooling the fire door itself. However, this construction has not proved successful since the heating of the top air is too slight and the burning of the door or the door plate is not elficiently prevented.
To avoid these disadvantages the present invention has been devised. In this invention the furnace door is provided with an opening in which, several cooling ribs are horizontally and exchangeably mounted, one of these ribs being arranged in the furnace chamber parallel to the door plate, in order to partly deflect the top air along the door plate. v
In the annexed drawing a constructional form of the subject matter of the invention is shown by way of example.
Fig. 1 shows the fire door in front elevation, Fig. 2 is a vertical central section thereof, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring to the drawing, a substantially circular door 1 is mounted on a hinge 2 which may be secured to a furnace (not shown), and may have hinge pivot pins 2 about which the door may swing. The door has a central aperture 3 over which fits a substantially rectangular cap having its bottom side open I but adapted to be closed by a pivotally mounted rocking plate 14. In order to secure the cap to the door, the cap is made with flanges 18 projecting laterally from the opposite vertical sides of the cap. The flanges lie flat against the face of the door and bolts 17 pass through them securing the cap to the door. To mount the rocking plate 14, centrally bored bosses 3 are formed integrally with the cap 8 at its lower corners and projecting down slightly therefrom. Holding the rock ing plate 14 and adapted to rotate within the bosses 3 are pivot members 8, 8, each having a central rod portion and a flattened end portion, the end portion projecting out ofthe boss and being slotted to accommodate the edges of the rocking plate, which edges are held in the slots by screw bolts 8".
The other end of the pivot member 8, projects-from theboss and has a weighted armor lever 9"secur,cd thereon by set screw 9 in such a position that when the arm is just above horizontal position (see dotted'line position of- Fig. 3) the rocking plate isvertical and the'bottom side of the cap 3 is open allowing top air to enter the furnace through the door opening 3. When the arm is rotated 90 clockwise to just past vertical (see full line position Fig; 3) the rocking, plate is vertical andtheair passage in the bottom side of the cap closed. Pins-1O and 11 are provided to hold the weighted arm from moving past the positions just described, it being apparent that the force of- I gravity acting on the arm will hold the arm against'the pins and therefore inthe positions described.
In order to heat the top air as it passes through the door aperture 3 into the furnace extend through the aperture 3 into the,
furnace and are provided with eyes 5 by which they may be mounted one above the other in horizontally parallel relation on two vertically parallel bolts 4 which pass down through and are secured to the top side of the, cap 3 near the side edges thereof. Rib 6 is mounted below the ribs 19 on the bolts 4 in the same manner as ribs 19 but rib 6 has an apron 6 which projects downwardly parallel to but spaced from the inside of the door 1. To insure the maintenance of this spacing a centrally located lug 7 projects from the apron toward the inside of the furnace door.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that when the plate 14 is vertical, air is permitted. 1
