SPRING SEAT FOR VEHICLES Filed July 15, 1929 25 afforded the upholstering l Patented Mar.` 10,1931

CINCINNATI, oiIIo, n` CoR-roRA'rioN 0F oHIo RAY SPRING COMPANY, or
OHIO, ASSIGNOR T THE WILLIAM il. MUR# SPRING Vsnm! IoR VEHICLES lApplication filed July 15,
This invention relates to spring seats thaty over, the ycontinuous sleeve presents a smooth comprise an upper and a lower wirefraine, cross strips secured to the lower frame, coiled springs mounted upon the cross strips and clips connecting the upper coils of the springs withthe upper frame.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for preventing the sagging and bending of the front member of the upper frame and for preventing the clips, that connect said upper member with the coils, from cutting the adjacent superposed upholstering.
Several expedients have been used by manufacturers of spring seats, to overcomel the aforesaid defects of this character of seat. @ne of such expediente consisted of brace wires extending from the front vmember of the top wire to the rearinember of the lower wire. Other means were wires connecting the front and rear members of the top frame and clips connecting these wires to the top coils of adjacent springs. However, these eX- pedients have proved unsatisfactory in use because the wires bend and no protection is against the abrasive effects of the clips that connect the top coils to the front member of the top frame.
The means embodying my invention vcomprise a strip of sheet metal, folded longitudinally, so as to form a sleeve, which is U-shaped in cross section and which embraces the front member of the top frame, the clips that connect the top coils of the springs to the frame, and the front portions of the top coils and is clamped about said clips and said adjacent portions of the top coils.
When persons seat themselves upon an automobile cushion their weight is exerted in a rearward and downward direction against the cushion, along the frontedge. his not .only puts a strain upon the front member of the top frame but forces the upholstering material violently against the uneven surfaces,
made by the clips, of the coils and the front i5 member of the top frame.
The continuous sleeve of this invention which embraces thefront top wire, the front part of the top coils and the clips kand is clamped thereon,.firmly braces these parts together besides giving its added strength to 1929. Serial No. 378,224.
the front member of thetop frame. kMoresurface to the upholstering, which consequently is not torn nor abraded by any rough edges. y
lliith reference to the drawings: f Fig. 1 is Vfront elevational view of an unupholstered spring seat structure'embody` ing the means of this invention.

vFig. 3 is view taken on line 34-3 of Fig. 1, parts being broken away. A
Fig. i is a detail view of the means of this invention.
Thel seat 8 has the upper and lower continu ous wire frames 9 and 10, respectively. Cross strips 11 are secured upon frame 10, extending from the front to the rear thereof. @oiled springs 12 are secured along strips 11 by suitable means,
13 struck upwardly from thebody of strips 11 and adapted to receive and bind the lowermost coils of the springs. adjacent the front of the seat contain a greater number of coils than those adjacent the rear, by which means the upper frame 9 is angularly disposed relative to lower frame 10. The springs 12 which are adjacent the members of the top frame 9'have their top f coils secured to frame 9 by means of clips 14. Suitable cross wiring connects the top coils of the springs and completes a supporting area for the upholstering. yThis cross wiring, inasmuch as it in-no way affects the present invention, is not shown in the drawings.
A sleeve 15 is positioned along the front Y member of frame 9, enclosing the series of clips and coils secured to the frame. Sleeve 15 comprises a strip, preferably of metal, benty longitudinaly adjacent its mid point to form a member substantially U shaped in cross section. Upper side 16 of sleeve'l is of greater width than the under side 17 and both of the Y sides 16 and 17 are of greater width than clips 14. Hence,
such as by lugs or eyeletsy The springs 12, n
pressed toward one another to secure sleeve l5 to the 'frame 9. rEhis formation results in the enlarged portions 18 enclosing` Jshe frame member, Clips and YCoils and Tdie depressed portions 19 enclosing only Jehe 'frame member and along which portions 19 Llie edges 16 and of sieee i5 may be pressed into firm contacting;- or near-contacti relationship whereby moi/emeir and o; aWai o' sleeve l5 are prevented.
