My invention relates to machines for forming sections of paper taken from long strips or rolls, into cylindrical cups. In such machines there is provided, in general, a holda rotatlnv mandrel on which the cup is formed, a feeding means to convey the paper from .the holder to the mandrel, a means to detach, from the remainder of the strip, definite lengths of paper for winding on the mandrel, a means to turn over and press in an edge of the paper wound on the mandrel to form a bottom to the cup and an ejector mechanism for ejecting the finished cup from the mandrel. Such a machine is illustrated in, and forms the subject matter of, an application filed by myself and Bernhard O. Opitz, Serial No. 171,792.
It has been found in practice that the bottoms of the cups formed on such machines are not always liquid tight and thus there is a tendency for the ice cream content of the cup to leak through the bottom, sometimes making a messy job. It is to overcome this difiiculty that my present apparatus has been devised.
The present invention has for an'obj ect to provide a means adapted to be mounted on the frame of and become apart of the cylinder forming machine, for supplying adhesive such as hot parafiine to the margin of the paper strip as it passes from the roll holder to the mandrel, whereby when the margin is folded over onto the mandrel to form the bottom of the cup the parafline will effect a sealing or adhesion of the folds and thereby close the bottom against leakage.
Further it is an object of the invention to provide means whereby parafiine will be applied-at intervals to the bottom forming edge portion only of the passing strip.
Further, it is an object to provide an electrically heated paraffine pot whereby any desired degree of heat may be applied :to the paraffine to render it more or less fluid as may be desired.
Another object is to provide a structure of such design and so related to the other parts of the machine that parafline will not accumulate and obstruct the free feed of paper to the mandrel.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends, my invention consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is an elevation of so much of a cylinder forming machine as is necessary to illustrate my invention, my invention being applied thereto.

Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of my invention, so much of the cylinder forming machine as is necessary to show the correlation of my present invention thereto, being illustrated shadowgraphically, the :driving chains and sprockets being omitted.

In the drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 represents the frame of the cylinder forming machine, 2 the paper roll holder, 3 the rotating mandrel, 4 a fixed bed plate over whichvthe paper passes to the mandrel and 5 the paper guide around the mandrel.
The primary fed rollers consist of a lower roller 6 and an upper roller 7, these rollers being provided with means to sever the paper strip transversely as well as to feed the strip forwardly.
The lower roller 6 is mounted on a shaft 8 and the upper roller 7 is mounted on a shaft 9, the shafts being gear connected to rotate in unison.
All of the foregoing parts may be of the construction illustrated in the application aforesaid.
Adjacent to the mandrel 3 are located the final feed rollers consisting of upper rollers 10 mounted on a shaft 12, and lower rollers 11 mounted on a shaft 13, these rollers being power driven as will later be explained.
The mandrel is driven by a sprocket and chain drive 14 from a power shaft of the machine in the usual manner, (this driving mechanism not being illustrated as it forms per se no part of the present invention).
15 designates the ejector rod and 16 the ejector rod head cupped to form the bottom of the paper cup when the said bottom is folded over and pressed inwardly by the folding and pressing mechanisms 551 and 521 My present invention consists in providing a pot 17 to contain the adhesive (preferably paraffine) the pot having a foot 18 by which it is secured to a portion of the frame 1 of the machine and having an upper bracket 19 also secured to the frame of the machine at the same side with the foot, and 20 designates a transverse bracket secured to the frame on the opposite side.
The pot 17 is provided with a recess 21 in which is located an electrical heating unit 22 having terminals 23 to which the conductor wires may be connected. The unit 22 is secured in the recess 21 in any desired manner.
Mounted loosely on the shaft 25 is a feeding roller 24 which is designed to dip into the fluid contents of the pot. Mounted on a shaft 27 to turn with it a distributer roller 26 that lies constantly againstthe feeding roller 24 and distributes the material from the feeding roller to the applicator roller 37 hereinafter again referred to.

On a shaft 30mounted in a suitable carrying bracket 43 that is secured to the frame of the machine, is a roller 29 over which the paper strip passes and which engages the underside of the edge of the paper that is to be folded over after being paraffined to form the bottom of the cup, the roller 29 cooperating with the roller 37.
The shaft 9 is provided with a driving sprocket 31 while a duplex sprocket 3233 is loosely journalled on shaft 25, idling there on. The shaft 27 is also provided with a sprocket 34 and the shaft 36 is provided with a sprocket 35. The shaft 12 has a sprocket 38 while the shaft 30 has a sprocket 39.
A chain 40 takes over sprockets 33 and 35 while a chain 41 passes around sprocket 31, over sprocket 32, under sprocket 34, around sprocket 38, over sprocket 39, back to sprocket 31. These chains 40 and 41 effect the proper driving of the respective shafts with whose sprockets they engage.
Mounted beneath the applicator roller 37 is a removable extension or section of the bed plate numbered 42, the bed plate and the removable section being cut away to permit projection of the roller 29 through the same.
The shaft 8 is provided wit-h a cam 44 that cooperates with a cam lever 45 loosely mounted on the shaft 25 but yieldingly held against turning by means of a spring carrier 46 fastened to the shaft 25 and having a leaf spring 47' engaged with a lug 48 on the lever 45 as will be clear from the drawings.
49 is a hold back lever fixed on the shaft 25, and 50 is the hold back spring which functions toretain the lever 45 in engagement with the cam 44.
51 designates the turn over foot and 52 the presser member which turns over and presses in the edge of the paper to form the bottom of the cup. i
In operation, a suitable quantity of parafline is placed within the pot and current turned on the heater to melt the paratfine. The feed roller 24 is turned by reason of its contact with the distributer roller, the distributor roller being positively driven, As the cam 44 moves the lever 45 and rocks the shaft- 25 the applicator roll 37 will alternately be brought into engagement with the distributer roller and with the paper strip where it passes over the fixedly located roller 29 thereby intermittently applying the parafline to the paper strip edge just before it passes to the mandrel so that when folded over and pressed in on the mandrel the paratfine will be still warm enough to adhere and thereby effect the proper sealing of the b ottom of the cup.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction, operation and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which it relates.

1. A paraifining apparatus for paper cylinder machines comprising a stationary pot, means associated with the pot to maintain the paraitine fluid, a feed roller in the pot, a shaft on which said feed roller is idly mounted, distributor roller with its shaft, bearings on said pot for said shafts, a swinging carrier secured to the first named shaft, spring means acting on said first named shaft in one'direction, and cam operated means acting on saidfirst named shaft in the opposite direction, an applicator roller with shaft journalled in bearings in said carrier, and means to drive said distributer roller and said applicator roller.
2. A para'ffining apparatus for paper cylinder machines comprising a stationary pot,
means associated with the pot to maintain the parafiine fluid, a feed roller in the pot, a shaft on which said feed roller is idly mounted, a distributer roller with its shaft, bearings on said pot for said shafts, a swinging carrier secured to the first named shaft, spring means acting on said first named shaft in one direction, and cam operated means actin on said first named shaft in the opposite 'rection, an applicator roller with shaft journalled in hearings in said carrier, said cam operated means comprising a lever loosely journalled on said first named shaft, a spring arm connecting said shaft and lever, and a cam shaft with cam to act on said lever.
